if anyone gets the chance get out today and visit a local amateur clubs field day activities. i think you will be amazed at the average hams abilities to communicate. the setups will be usually be simple antennas and emergency type power sources such as batteries, emergency generators and even solar power. field day will operations will run all nite and till noon tomorrow.  73's aa5ez

Does all the clubs hold this activity on the same weekend?, because Ft. Smith, AR had one also.  They expected a very large turn-out for the event.    I didn't go, can't take much of that hot weather.   Got out at day-break to do a small task that turned into a real chore and I'm still paying for it today.

yep 4b field day is at least nation wide. every hardy, sun toughened ham that wants to and is able sets up on field day. improvised antennas and emergency power systems are the rule! field day is a yearly test of ham radios ability to get thru when nothing else can. 9-11 in new york ham radio was the most reliable communications going. that was in spite of the loss of 2 or  3 repeters on the wtc itself. hurricane katrina, same story. even in this age of cell phones and the internet old fashioned ham radio and the ingenuity of it's practitioners is still a most viable form of communications.73's aa5ez
