it  is all you would need, 99.9% of the time, if you know how to apply it.  If you dont know how to maximize its effectivity, its all you need 99% of the time in the lower 48.

Besides being a great caliber you can find ammo for it just about any place on this planet.  If you can shoot, it will make you look good.

I've had pretty good luck with mine with  the new Federal Fusion Ammo...looks like it will do it's job as good as far out as I normally hunt... :agree:

By all means, don't get it!  Its way too effective and able to do too many things very well.  Its the jack of all trades, and will completely eliminate the need for other guns.  I have two...

Honestly, its a great caliber.  In my hands, I prefer a little less power for our big bodied deer, if we are talking about power of this sort.  Its kind of my go-to gun that is never out of place.  I did well with hogs and elk with it...however, that hasn't stopped me from preferring a 338 for elk, a 45-70 for hogs, and a 270 for deer.  Just my opinion.  The 06 does them all!

Hard to believe its been around for over 100 years! Like the .45-70 it will be around in the next century too.  Only centerfire caliber in my inventory that I have more than two of.

It's hard to find anything wrong with the 30-06. In fact, I firmly believe that most shooters of the 300 Win Mag and the like don't realize how much cartridge the 30-06 is. I cannot imagine the shot at 300 yards it won't handle, and I can't imagine a shot on game at ranges farther than 300 yards that a fella should take. It would surprise me to find out that the average range game is taken at is any farther than 200 yards. IN the end all I can do is echo what others have said, a fella with a 30-06 has enough gun for anything that one is likely to encounter.

Only gun I hunted with last year. H&R Synthetic. Took both the bucks I shot at with the cheap Winchester 150 gr. Powerpoints. Love mine.

Been carrying a 30-06 Handi since 1995.  I had it sighted in to be dead on at 300 yards, and can consistantly hit a clay target at that range.  I had a Shepard scope mounted on it for long range work.  I shot only my hand loads, and loaded Speer 125gr TNTs, Sierria 165gr BTs, and Nosler 180gr Partitions.  I shot many wolves at 500 plus yards running.  I missed a few too.  I have hit standing wolves at 600 yards.  I shoot red foxes at 300 and 400 yards.  I have shot Caribou out to 500 yards, and one Moose at that range.  Last year I shot a real nice Caribou at 200 yards, using the 165gr bullet.  I also shot a Moose at 250 yards with the Nosler bullet.  I hit the Moose right between the eyes, it dropped instantly.  The only thing I don't like carrying it for is Grizzly/Brown Bears.  Many have been killed by the 30-06, but I still perfer a .338 for them.

My Handi 30-06 has out lived three scopes, and really taken a beating.  I carry it strapped to the windshield frame on my Dune Buggy, on the handlebars of my motorcycle, on the rear rack of my snowmachine, or 4-wheeler.  The last time I shot it it shot just as good as it always did.  unfortionatly, the my 30-06 barrel was stolen three weeks ago.  The thieves took it not to get the barrel, but to get the $600.00 scope it was carrying.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Carlos Hathcock, a former US Army sniper during vietnam, can attest to the fact that there are over 50 (all confirmed) former North VC soldiers that would tell of the effectiveness of the '06, if they could.

Some were over 1,000yds away.

I don't have one in a Handi, Mine is a Savage, but my guess is it will out do most, if not all of us.  It's no less effective in the Handi than my Savage, or Calos' remington.

Handirifle, Carlos used a Winchester M70 in 30-06 until his last tour and that when he used the Rem. m700. If anyone has some spare time on their hands i would suggest the book "marine Sniper" Great book about Hathcock.

Durring WWI the Marines that were with the french troops at bella woods showed just how effective the 30-06 was in the 1903 springfield. The germans were 700-800 yards downhill and the marines started popping them off. later some captured Germans had letters found on them that had complaints that they were getting hit by the rifle fire before they heard the sound of the shot!

JUST TRADED FOR A 30 06 BBL FROM A MEMBER. IT LOCKED UP ON ONE OF MY FRAMES WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING TO IT. TOOK IT OUT TO THE RANGE THIS PAST WEEKEND AND LOVED EVERY PULL OF THE TRIGGER. I WAS SHOOTING 150 GR HORNADY SST INTERLOCK WITH 47 GR OF VARGET. ZEROED 1 3/4 IN HIGH AT 100 YDS. 3/4" MOA. IT WOULD PROBABLY DO BETTER IF I WASN'T SO OLD. MY FIRST RIFLE BACK SOME 50 YEARS AGO WAS THE 30 06. THERE'S PROBABLY NO BETTER  "DO ALL"  CARTRIDGE AROUND. DON'T HESITATE. GO AHEAD AND GET IT.

Wow did you guys bring back a golden oldie. Looking over the names of folks who posted to it back in the day it began I see five folks who seem to no longer be with us and one who has died. Three haven't posted in several years and two in several months. It's quite amazing how the membership that are active changes with time.

Since my post was four years ago, I'll post again.  I still carry my Handi 30-06 about 90% of the time.  Got a new barrel to replace the stolen one.  Got a Nikon scope on it now.  Back to making 500 yard shots regularly at wolves and coyotes.  By changing bullets it can be used for anything, from Foxes up to Moose.  I shoot every kind of bullet from the Barnes 110 gr Varmint grenade and solid, up to the 220 Nosler Partition.

There is a reason the 30-06 is the standard all others are judged by.

I have a stainless '06 Handi barrel on a blue frame, a synthetic MC stock weighted with #4 shot, and a BSA Sweet 30-06 Scope.  It's an excellent combination.  The lead in the stock cuts recoil down to about that of a .243 or a 7mm-08.  I shoot, and the scope is set up for, 180 gr. Federal Power Shoks.  Sighted in at 100 yards, with the 180 gr. turret cap on the scope, I just turn it to the yardage of the shot, and the bullet is right there.  It's fast, easy and efficient.  The scope comes with three caps for 3 different weight bullets.  I don't use it as much as I probably should, because I've got an infatuation with the straight walled calibers from .45-70 down to .38 special.  They do about all I need to do around here.  The .357 Maximum ended the career of a fat chuck Sunday morning, but any of my Handis could have taken him.

As everyone has said, you can't go wrong the the '06.
