Saw a 500 today
« on: July 21, 2009, 02:11:37 PM »
I was looking for a 44 mag and saw a 500 S&W.  Someone had removed the sites and mounted a scope.  Price was $139.  This was at a Gander Mtn no less.  I don't have any interest in a 500.  Another caliber to stock....but thats a pretty good price.  What would you do?

Sounds like maybe the barrel is loose on it, a not so rare problem with the 500, but H&R would fix it, sounds like a bargain to me.  ;)

The stock and frame is worth that much.  If it didn't shoot, I'd have Rem fix it and/or part it out.

A gun for the price of 3 boxes of ammo. .500 is more popular than there is reason for. And if you look at the archives, inherently inaccurate. Yet, I have seen them everywhere that sells Handis. Go figure.

I wouldn't be so trusting of Gander Mountain.  At least the one by me sells used stuff with crud in the bores.  They were selling an old JC higgins bolt action 12 ga.  This gun was recalled.  I know cuz I have the 16 ga, not recalled.  I told their "gunsmith" that he should do some homework, these things shoot the bolt back out the receiver.  He gave me the yeah, yeah and put it back on the shelf.  hopefully no one gets hurt.

One thing I have noticed in all this "shortage of pistol ammo" is there has always been 500 S&W ammo on the shelves here in Billings, MT. ???  DP

At $2.50-$3 a shot x 20 a box, it is roughly the price of the gun just to sight it in, and figure out what ammo shoots and what ammo doesn't.

That's what makes reloading a blessing.  I reload the 500 for around 40 cents a round.  (Still on the expensive side, but far less than 3$ a shot)

That's a steal.  Just buy another barrel if you aren't interested in the 500.

Hello. I've been a member for awhile but this is my first post.

A couple of years ago, I bought a H&R in 500 S&W for over twice what you mentioned and mine did not have a scope (that was extra). I also saw some 44 Magnum H&R's for the same price. Since I do not reload for the 500 S&W (nor do I need to since I only fire 5-6 rounds/year out of it), I bought some Federal Premium Ammo with the 275 gr Barnes all copper bullet. This ammo sure was expensive but this rifle with the Federal ammo cuts 1 big hole at 100 yards (3-shot groups). So, do I like mine? Heck, yeah! IMO, I think the selling price you mentioned is a great deal.

That sounds like a decent price to me.  This is also my first post, and my first afternoon after shooting my new .500 Handi Rifle.  I was definitely well pleased.

I did add some lead to the buttstock.  Seemed like a good idea, and it was.

Didn't really put it on paper, but it certainly hit informal targets with authority.

My 53 year old eyes can see the fiber optic sights!

Dies and mold will be ordered soon.  I am even thinking of putting a 1907 type sling on it.

The credit card would have melted and the 4473 would have caught on fire from the speed that I had snatched it up.  :P

I would buy another one.  I love mine, its very accurate and hits hard.  Never shot anything that bleeds with but I know it would put meat in the freezer.  At that price I would have bought it without thinkin twice.  Where was this by the way?

Ok, here's my report. I made a deal with a forum member to sell him the barrel, so I bought the rifle.  Only problem is now that I own it I have bonded with it.  So being a man of my word, I will sell the barrel and come up with money somehow to try to find myself another.  I have no need for a 500, I just bought another 45-70 wed. I have no 500 dies, shells or bullets, but just holding it..... I also have no money. There is no escape.
