T/C's "Lobo" scopes, or at least mine
« on: August 08, 2009, 08:40:51 AM »
I posted this over in the Optics forum the other day, but haven't gotten any response.  I'm guessing maybe because it's pretty T/C specific:

I picked up an older Contender .22 LR barrel that has a T/C branded "Lobo" scope installed on it.  It claims to be a 3x scope, but to my eyes, it's barely 1.5x.  I have a 2-6x Simmons which, on 2x, has much more magnification than the 3x Lobo.  I also have several rifle scopes, both variable and fixed magnification, which tell me the 3x is wishful thinking.

The Lobo is a nice clear scope with a usable exit pupil and a fine target crosshair.  But I'm wondering:  Do they always overrate the magnification?  Who makes them?

I had several  1 1/2X and 3X Lobos on "early" (1978) T/C barrels. I liked them mostly because they were small, but as you say, the magnification was "optimistic", to be kind. They were also not very strong by today's standards. I had one on an octagon .22LR barrel that I used for squirrel hunting for a few years, but I actually had one fail due to recoil on a .22 Magnum!

I agree with Ken , mine was also on a early T/C , around the late seventies ..supposed to be a 1 1/2 X , didn't seem to me like it had any magnafication at all.  Mine also broke , it was mounted on a 10" oct barreled 30/30. However I must say T/C replaced it......I broke that one too. they replaced that one, which I traded to my dealer for a 2X Bushnell Phantom. It also broke........finally went to a 2X Leo......it was still on it when I sold it, 10 years later!          regards

My 2X Leupolds are in reality more like 1.5X(if that). ???

As I recall, Leupold clearly rates their 2X EER scopes @ 1.7X, and their 4X EER scopes @ 3.5X, on their spec sheets.
Not everyone knows this, but the eyepiece on a Leupold scope, when screwed in, wiil reduce magnification somewhat, and when screwed out, will increase magnification a bit. The reason for the adjustment capability is to sharpen the crosshair for the individual's eye, so there is a limit to how much an individual can change magnification, and still have a sharply focused crosshair.
I BELIEVE that the Lobos had the same trait, but that's been a LONG time ago!
