Rossi Puma .357 Carbine 16" barrel
« on: May 08, 2009, 05:35:25 PM »
Saw one of these Rossi Puma .357 carbines with 16" barrel.  Large lever loop  Pretty cool. Anybody have any opinions about or experience with this piece?

Is it possible to scope it?

Nice carbine, the 16" trapper would be the last levergun I would think about scoping though. I am pretty sure Rossi makes a scout type mount that would work.
If your serious about glass, I would look for a Marlin myself.

I have a 16" Puma in .357 and it is the handiest little carbine around.

It's not meant for a scope, go with buckhorn sights or the aperature sight from Marbles.

Have had a Rossi walnut stocked 24" octagon "rifle" in 357 mag for years. Ain't for sale. Handiest rifle I have. Plenty of power at around 120yds, and is a tac driver. No scope though. I drilled and tapped for a Lyman aperture just like the one on my Model 94 Winchester 3030.

That is definately a sharp rifle. A reciever sight is definatley on the agenda when I get mine.

I already have  2 .357 pistols I cast bullets for. I have a mess of 158 gr roundnoses 124 gr roundnoses and 105 gr SWC. I figure I can use the 105's for small game.

Will these rifles feed 180 gr cast bullets ok?

Not sure about the 180 cast, I have been shooting 180 gr XTP's with out a hitch, but I have got to tell you, not much room to spare.
My Puma started out as a 20", but I chopped the barrel, fitted the butt plate better and refinished the wood, Sweet little shooter now.

My Rossi will feed 187gc fn lbt style , the only thing I have to watch is the OAL, it took some 'spermenting to get to the right length.
I would recommend that you try LilGun, I have had great success with it in heavy bullet applications    hth    Doug

My Rossi .357 feeds 180 gr hornady style fp Westcast bullets sized .358 no worries , I have fitted a Skinner dovetail mounted peep sight , the rifle shoots better than I can . I bought a Artic Fox Electrodot sight to scout mount but could not bring myself to mount it - put it on my BL22 instead

I've had two experiences with one, so far.   8)

Yesterday, when I bought a new one.  ::)

And today, when I gave the bolt-top safety a vasectomy.   :o

Mine is a BrazTech Rossi

Rangr44 congrats!
What is BrazTech?, is that Rossi's replacement for the Puma?

I neutered the safety also and made a filler for the hole in the bolt.

How did you deal with it?

Scott, The new company, BrazTech, is now the authorized Rossi firearms distributor in North America.
Their logo is on the box my new .357 came in.
BrazTech is the partnership of Rossi and Taurus International Manufacturing, Inc. and is headquartered in Miami, Florida.
Previously, Rossi distribution was authorized by/for Interarms of Alexandria, Virginia.

I posted a step-by-step safety replacement plug picture tutorial, in our gunsmithing section under "button, button" - using an old issue Remington 1100 crossbolt safety button I had in my scrounge box.

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,173491.0.html

My next step will be to D/T the top edge of the M92's receiver side walls for a new Williams top-mounted Peep sight, I also have on hand, that's meant for a Winchester 94AE - the rifle with the rear scope mount holes atop the side rails.

Hi lgm,

I have a couple of the Pumas.  Very nice, well made little rifles.  My .357 is a small loop lever.  It is marked "92 SRC"  and it has a 16" barrel.  I doesn't have a saddle ring so I guess that's Brazilian humor.  I would not by any 1892 or 1895 model or clone if I wanted a scoped rifle.  There is no way to do it except offset or scout style and both of them pretty much suck IMHO.  I mounted a Wiliiams receiver peep sight on both my .357 and .454 and both shoot great.  My eyes are old and not so good but the peep sights work.  I use 180 hardcast truncated cone bullets with a stiff load and I can hit an 6" target everytime at 100 yards.  That's "minute of hog" or "minute of deer" for our little Texas deer.  These are just really fun guns to shoot.  You can reload the .38 Specials cheap and plink with it like a .22.  I don't understand why peope make such a big deal about the safety.  I put mine on "fire" and leave it alone.  It is so cheesy, you could put a drop of glue on it and fix it on "fire" and not worry about it anymore.  If you want a real Model 92, belly up the thousand bucks and get one.  If you like this kind of fun...get one of these.  It's a hoot!

Very nice. What did you use to strip the black crud off the Rossi stock?

Thanks Warhawk, I used a paint stripper that I bought from home depot. The can got punctured and I tossed it, can't remember the name.
The stripped stock was an ugly black/green and I stained it with French Red. I think I got very lucky with the final finish.

Here is what it looked like stripped.

When I ordered mine I ordered the better grade and got walnut. I also got the ugliest finish I have ever seen on that walnut. My choice was lacquer thinner. I washed the finish off, and found some really nice figuring, and then hand rubbed true oil in between sandings with steel wool. After 5 coats, it looked just like my 1958 Model 94 Winchester used to look when it was new. The action smoothing I also done myself but that was the easy part. I put a new, and better fitted ejector in, and extractor, and the thing feeds perfect. Navy Arms sent me the parts, and extras also FREE.
This rifle I also fitted with a Lyman 66, and XS front sight cut down so the Lyman sits low on the receiver, and is sighted in identically to my Model 94 3030. I have carried and shot my Model 94 Winchester for almost 52 years now, but with the population growth, and the 357 magnum power out of a rifle, the 92 gets far more carry time. It doesn't shoot quite as far as the 3030, so that feature make me more comfortable.

Back to the OP topic, scoping (not that I'd do it) - my .357 big loop is factory D/T'd atop the barrel rear for Rossi's scout scope mount.  The plugged screw holes were hidden under the open longleaf rear sight.
