USH 20 Gauge Choices

I want to get an Ultra Slug Hunter in 20 gauge.  But the standard version is too heavy for me (8-9 lbs).

But I think the new "light" version would probably be too light for me (less than 6 lbs).

The only other choice is the "compact" version (7 lbs).  It has a 22" barrel.  Question: Am I giving up anything by going with a 22" barrel instead of the standard 24" barrel?

I don't think you give up a thing.  In fact, I think you gain a firearm that will be more manuverable in the tree, easier to carry, yet has enough weight to absorb recoil (When a scope is added it will put the weight of the gun in the 8 lb range). 

And while the length of pull is one inch shorter than the standard model and for many people that could be a plus as well.  With heavier clothing during hunting season a 14 inch lop is often too long for many people.

You could also add laminated stocks or do the steel bar in the stock.Kurt

I think If you go with the new ULSH you will be quite pleased. I was able to aquire one back in March or there abouts. Very happy with it. Alsredoak

If you do go with eithor of the heavy USH guns you can take out the rod in the butt and that cuts a pound out.

  I would like to add to what others have said... Go with the ULSH, add laminated stocks, steel rod, and a Sims Limbsaver recoil pad. Those are my plans for my 20ga ULSH anyways. I hope to end up with something 7-8lbs in the end. My intended optics, Bushnell Holosight, won't add much weight.  If I do go with a scope though, I will consider using steel rings vs. aluminum when I'm trying to manage weight.  Every little bit adds up.

With the shorter barrel you are not giving up anything, you will gain all the others have said. Plus you will have a gun that shoots better, especialy the faster slugs. Look at any other rifled slug barrel you can get youre hands on. I've yet to see another one 24 in's long, although I think the Tar Hunts may be.
With the faster slugs the gun starts to move from recoil before the slug is clear of the barrel, the shorter the barrel the less time the gun has to move before the slug exits the barrel.

The encore prohunter barrels are 28". I'd personally like to see how these shoot but I'm not shelling out $300.00 to satisfy that curiousity ...yet.
