Are these barrels worth getting? Advice sought please :)
« on: August 01, 2009, 01:34:33 PM »
I have a chance to pick up a 17 Remington heavy barrel, and a 300 H&H Mag heavy barrel for an Encore, but I'm mostly interested in just the frame and stock set for my own personal use.  Both of the barrels are blued, I'm not sure of the length, I only know they are rifle barrels.

Is there much of a market for the two barrels?   ???

I believe the 17 would go no matter if it were a rifle or pistol length. Just a fun round. The 300 in a rifle would probably appeal to someone that hunted larger game. IMHO

Both cartridges are good.  I think the 17 Remington would probably be easier to sell than the 300 H&H Magnum.  This isn't because the 300 H&H Magnum is a bad cartridge; it's because ammo and brass is less available than for other .308 caliber magnums.  I believe you could sell either fairly easily for in the $155 to $175 range and, if you found a very interested party that wasn't particularly good a shopping, might get up to $220 each for them.  Those prices are assuming the barrels are in pretty pristine condition.

They both turned out to be rare Customshop models in almost new condition. :)

I have them posted here: http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,179456.0.html

There is a reason they're rare.

Im an avid Encore shooter and collector of custom shop barrels as Im also a shooter and fan of the 300 H&H magnum and Id be willin to make a small wager that the encore suited with a 300 H&H barrel would prolly like maybe beat yer azz into next week and it wouldnt get shot to much on top the fact that ammo is very costly........................

The reasons they're rare are not because either cartridge is bad or that barrels are hard to get.  Any time you like you can order a custom shop barrel for either cartridge.  The fact is, not than many people want guns chambered for either cartridge.

In the case of the 17 Remington, not that many people want them since barrels foul more easily and are harder to clean than larger diameter barrels, ammo is harder to come by than that for the 204 Ruger, 223 Remington, 22-250, etc. and the windbucking ability is less than the .224s.

The 300 H&H Magnum is, face it, obsolete.  Ammo is not in as good supply as say 300 Win. Mag., case life is poor because of the design, etc.  It's a classic cartridge and a good cartridge but not as good when all things are considered as a 300 Win. Mag. or a 300 Weatherby Mag.  I, by the way, shoot an Encore in 300 Win. Mag. and the recoil isn't that bad and it wouldn't be any worse in a 300 H&H Mag.

I guess you can call the ol 300 H&H obsolete if you like but the ol 300 Win Mag and the 300 weatherby were both born of the 300 H&H,I dont believe there is any problem with the H&H design as it looks like a Giant Hornet case and it is the slickest case to extract from a die or a chamber of any cartridge Ive ever seen and deadly accurate to boot,Ive got a model 70 winchester and a 721 Remington in the H&H and I truly love this round except for one thing and that is its butt stompin recoil,I shot an Elk with it about 4 years back up in the Rockies and it will put the boom boom out go the lights on him thats no doubt,I went to shootin a 338 Win Mag a short time back and can tolerate the recoil a bitt better there then I can of other folks 300 Win mags that Ive shot that pop ya like a jackhammer...............
