I believe this question was supposed to be pertaining to a swallow carrying a coconut...not sure if it's African, though I suppose it'd have to be to carry a coconut...

Many here, probably know Caesar's famous line, "I came, I saw, I conquered." Well, here's my new motto: I logged in, I read thread, I scratched head.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

In a land far away, in a time long ago, the Boer War was, then wasn't.....I'll have to primarly agree with Ex 49'er, what ever they could get their hands on! But, I'm sure with a question like this there is an answer, can't wait 'till the 31st to find out! BoomLover

You are correct in saying they used what ever they could get. Mostly it was taken from the English. There was a Artical in the Magnum magizine About a Boer that actualy build a cannon in Soeth Africa during the war. There was a couple of pictures as well and it was very crude looking. I will try and get permission from the Magnun Magazine to place the article here.

At the battle of Spion Kop the boers inflicted heavy casualties on the British by the use of indirect fire with Krupp made HOWITZERS (yes, i voted in the poll).  The recently made German field pieces were used by firing over a ridgeline and the British had no way of firing in reply using direct fire cannons and further were pinned down by accurate mauser rifle fire whilst trying to find cover on what was essentially a large rock bowl.  It is listed as one of the great military disasters in British military history.  Even though the Boers were essentially a guerilla army the Germans had a lot of sympathy for their cause and were always looking for an excuse to upset the British hence the supply of some Howitzers along with the know how to use them in what was then a new way.  The British paid them back in WW1 by taking Tanzania off them.
