ANOTHER OUTSTANDING ANTIQUE BRONZE YACHT CANNON
« on: October 10, 2009, 04:24:19 AM »
This one is in my collection, because it is an original in the style of the Civil War Model 1857 12pdr Napoleon.  The bronze barrel is 32 inches overall with a 2” bore. The carriage is 17 inches high to the top of the trunnions. The wheels are 7.5 inches in diameter and the total weight is around 200 pounds. The back of the barrel is marked  Wm READ & SONS, BOSTON and the No. 66.  It also came  with an original mahogany ramrod (not shown).  The seller mentioned it was from the Marblehead, Mass. area.

You will notice shown here, is an original advertisement from Wm Read & Sons in “Murray’s Adventures In The ADIRONDACKS”, published in Boston in 1869, offering “BRONZE YACHT GUNS”, ONE-POUNDERS MOUNTED ON BEST MAHOGANY CARRIAGES.

You have a fine looking cannon Sir! Always nice to see original unmolested pieces here.
Also nice is the fact you have documentation in the form of the advert from the maker.
;D

That is a beauty, both cannon and woodwork! Very nice!

Cpt Ed,

That is another superior specimen that has me sitting here, and staring while drooling down the front of my shirt. Hey, this may be a little personal, but I've got to ask; does Intoodeep treat you like a king? Because if he doesn't, I just want to let you know that I've been up for adoption for many years now. ;)
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Tx for posting, have never heard of nor seen a cannon by Wm Read before.  Antique muzzle loading salute guns with good maker's marks seem to be very, very scarce.
