Shockwave or XTP for Whitetails?
« on: July 10, 2009, 10:51:21 AM »
Just based on these 2 bullets, which would you pick for whitetails?  Assume that I get equal performance out of my gun with both bullets.

Assuming the accuracy is all the same for these bullets at all ranges, then I'd flip a coin or buy the less costly.  Shot placement kills deer.  I took a nice buck last season with a HP-XTP if that helps you.

Both are really good bullets!!! I've killed lots of deer with both. I switched to the shockwaves (SST) a few years ago because they have less drop at 200 yards!!! But they don't kill any better than the xtp!!! Give them both a try and see what you and your gun like!!! Good luck!!!

I haven't shot the XTP's out my encore but I've gotten very good accuracy out of the shockwaves. They do load like a bear but as good as they shoot I feel it's worth it. I shot my last deer at 150 yards with a 250gr. shockwave in front of 150 grains granular triple seven and it went through both shoulders of the deer. With my exsperience of messing around with XTP's out of various handguns  I feel the xtp would have given the same performance, but I do feel the shockwave would give the better trajectory. Making a decision on the two bullets to me would settle on what range I would be hunting the most, if your hunting at the longer ranges I'd pick the shockwaves. If it stayed to shorter ranges then either is a great choice.

I've got a 240gr XTP and a 250gr SW in my range box taken from deer in consecutive seasons.  XTP quatering away at 75 bang/flop.  SW at 50 quartering away, hobbled 15 yds and fell over.  Both bullets removed from off side shoulder hide.  Can't tell them apart except XTP is a little shorter.  Longer ranges, go with the SW.  IMHO.  Also worthy of note, I shoot 90 gr of powder usually and have had pass-thru's with the shockwaves at 125 yds.  If they don't fall over, they usually walk or run a few yds first.

Never tried shockwaves.  Killed a lot of game with XTP's and they work great - penitrate deep, hold together.  So, XTP

I have had great success with 240gr XTP out of my Encore.
My load: W209 primers, 100 gr loose 777, tan Nosler sabots, 240gr Hornady XTP
Very accurate and effective load.

I also shoot these out of my Super 14 Contender 44mag.

I shot a doe behind the sholder with a 300gr XTP several years ago. Didn't seem to do as good a job as the 240's.  IMO

My Encore also likes the 240 hp/xtp. 110gr. Pyrodex RS. Took a doe at 140yd. last season. Boom-flop!

Have been using the 240 grain .430 XTP bullet since my return to muzzleloading about 10 years ago.  Have killed about 20 deer and dozens of hogs with that bullet:  Most of my kills were bang flops or near bang flops.  Used to use two Pyrodex pellets or 100 grains of Pyrodex RS in my CVA guns.  I now use 110 grains of Goex Pinnacle 3F.  Both Pyrodex and Pinnacle work equally well in my CVA guns.

Bought an Encore a few years ago and use the 250 grain SST/Shockwave in it along with 120 grains of Goex Pinnacle 2F.  Have killed several deer and and a dozen or so hogs with that bullet and it performs very well.

I have used both with very good results.

The way I decide which one to setup the rifle for, is if where I am hunting the shots will be under 150 yards I use the XTP.  If shots could be over 150 yards, I use the SW/SST.

I have killed plenty of deer with both, but went to the shockwaves due to flatter trajectory. Terminal performance was great with both. I say whichever shoots best, and how far your shots tend to be.

XTP/MAG 200 grain 10mm.  Hold together better than xtp and fly great over 110 grains of BH209 and 50/40 cr Harvester sabot.
Please be sure to check your gun at the door.  WHAT!

I have shot about 25 whitetails with the .452 300 grain xtp.(the non mag)
From ranges of 10 to 165 yards. With powder charges never exceeding 110 grains.
Out of 5 different inlines.
I only recovered 2 bullets and they were perfect mushrooms.
Great blood trails, but usually they were down inside 30 yards.
It is a great bullet coupled with MMP or Hornady sabots.
Great price when compared to others.
Maybe not as flat shooting as ballistic tip styled bullets but it wont matter out to 150 yards
With 100 grain charge and gun sighted in to 100 yards dead on drop will only be about 4-6 inches at 150. less if using faster velocity powders than me. I used a lot of real black powder out of my inlines and it gives less velocity than 777 or Blackhorn 209.
You cant go wrong with these.
