What! Take my Handi?
« on: August 01, 2009, 11:55:30 AM »
I have a soon to be 16 yr. old grandson that I promised his pick of some guns.  Notice I said "some" guns.  I placed about 6 in front of him but he declined.  He wanted my SKS.  Now, thats not a good choice for a 16 yr. old who lives in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

He studied the matter a moment and then wanted my 357 Handi.  Silly Boy.  Might as well want to cut off my head.

I'm still mulling over the SKS, but the 357 is not in contention.

I'm thinking a nice Handi 243..........

That was one of the reasons I sold my CETME.  My teenaged stepson always wanted it to come along on range trips and he'd blast through 20rd mags like they were candy if I didn't pay close attention.  Even when surplus .308 was cheap that hurt... :o

Ponca ,

They arent as easy as you would think to come by due to their popularity , I dont know if they have done away with the SB2 357 mag option but i know that here of late when i see them available online they are the SB1 recievered combo rifles ... Now i did find three 357 mag synthetic stocked 357 mags at my local gander mountain that Were SB2 framed and a couple 44 mags same stock and reciever they were going for $250.00 something...

I thought " boy if money were better i would buy all them and turn around and sell um to the guys here for an extra $ 25-30 bucks" lol.. Especially those 357's ;) they are just that popular and sought after..

But  I think that might violate a GBO rule if i'm not mistaken   ::) ...

Now if the one that Mech has is a ejector model OH HELL NO that boy better choose again HAahahahah  Cause those a quite a bit harder to come by ;)

The boy "settled" for a Rem Mod. 12- 22. in pristine shape.  He's smarter than he looks.  Probably the most valuable gun in the safe and a family heirloom.

He's got the best of both worlds.  His g-grandpa's gun, something to plink with, and something that has some value!! :D

You are very fortunate to have a grandson...i envy you that cuz i will likely never have that opportunity.Lot's of guns out there, but not so many grandson's.....if he's a good kid give him your 357...go buy yourself a new one. That way he gets a 357 along with the provenance that it belonged to his grandfather

Truth be told, it doesn't matter to me which one he takes, except for the fact that he live just outside Philadelphia, and his Mom will have to drive him to a range.  Ammo is almost non-exhistent.  His Dad is about to deploy to the sand pit.

For now, the 22 is the best option.  He can take ammo home with him from here,  and his Mom can help him with learning to shoot.

Later he can have what he wants.

I presume the City of Brotherly Love isn't a firarms owner's best friend.

I presume the City of Brotherly Love isn't a firarms owner's best friend.

A lot of U.S cities and states aren't, and the list seems to be getting longer.  A lot of them have their own versions of your C68.  (Is that the correct number?)  We, a small group of friends and I, cancelled a proposed Quebec caribou hunt when that was passed as a silent protest.  It wasn't because of the 50 bucks to bring a firearm in, it was because of your loss of rights.

Back to the thread.  I set aside my 7mm-08 for my 14 year old grandson to hunt with this Fall.  If he does well with it and likes it, it will be his for Christmas.  I wouldn't give a youngster anything but a single shot.  I believe they make a kid a better hunter and marksman.

I agree on the single shot to a point.  This kid is already a great shot, but he's not a hunter and has no interest.  To give him a gun he could not easily get ammo for would be a waste of time.  The only time he shoots is when he comes to my house, and then he can shoot whatever he wants, (and he shoots them all well).  The 22 is the best option at this moment.

If I give him my Handi, would he even be able to find 38/357 to shoot?  Doubtful.  I only have about 150 reloads and no more brass.  When I last found 357 locally they wanted $42.00 per 20 for what they had at Dick's SG.

At least he can shoot the 22, as I have thousands of rounds on hand.

I feel you there Mech ,

That 357 mag has been damn near as scarce as the 380 acp for a the last few months , and when i find it they price it like precious metals heh

But i cant say that i ever have a hard time locating once fired through local buddies or online here and other places .. I think your grand boy did choose wisely , But i also think the mag would be the next bump up in power and recoil ..
