Come and take it (cannon)
« on: July 30, 2009, 05:08:27 PM »
I have to admit I was expecting more and the museum caretaker assured me that is the real deal. About 20” long and 1” bore. The carriage and straps are remakes but correct according to a journal and drawings in it.

Just below the vent hole at 3oclock you can see the old spiked vent. The new larger one was dun to help with faster shooting at Indians. Why not just drill out the existing hole?

Nice to see a color photo of it all I have seen in the past were black & white.

I seem to remember an article in the muzzle loading artillerymen (before name change) it was found I believe in a river near one of the battle sites.

the larger touch hole may be because that was the only size drill they had, remember this was the frontier......

"Why not just drill out the existing hole?"  Sometimes it's quicker to start fresh, it is possible the spike was made from say a piece of file......

carbide or cobalt drills would not be around for a bunch of years, so if the metal spike was too hard it's time for a new hole.

They spiked the cannon and drilled a new hole. The story I was tolled was on there way to the Alamo the carriage broke. They did not want the Indians to get it so they berried it. And planed on coming back for it. No one left to get it after the battle of the Alamo so it was lost. About a hundred years later a flood uncovered it and was found by a rancher in a creak that fed the Guadalupe River. I’m trying to lighting the rest of the photos.

Is this at the Alamo museum? We'll be over there in a couple weeks for a knife show down the street from it. I know they have a lot of old cannons out in the courtyard. I didn't remember seeing anything like that one there, but it's been a while.

The story of the Gonzales cannon varies from it was given to the settlers to it was made by a blacksmith who was a settler,
it was spiked when received it was spiked later, it is the "Come and take it" cannon..... it is not the "come and take it cannon".
here are three different articles you be the judge.  Oh and Don it's in Gonzales not the Alamo.

I've always been under the impression that the CATI cannon was a full-sized tactical weapon, which I'd interpret to be at least, say, a three-pounder gun.  In those days, that was about the bare minimum anyone, even poor rebels scraping for supplies, would think of using in combat.  We're talking about at least a 2.9-inch bore.

The cannon pictured is in my opinion no more than a salute cannon, and no amount of legend and big signs will convince me otherwise.  Salute cannons of this approximate size very often had no trunnions, and grossly oversized cascabels.  They lacked trunnions for the simple reason that most of them were made from existing steel or iron cylinders, bored out, and trunnions would have to be added and were totally unnecessary for the purpose.  I've never understood why so many salute guns had oversized cascabels, but they do.

In my experience in 35 years of cannon research and collecting, every time I hear a story about a cannon that was dug up somewhere near some old battlefield, it turned out to be total hogwash.  The intent of the story is usually to reincarnate an ordinary salute cannon into a priceless historic artifact.

From the first story linked above:

Quote
delivering a six-pound load at short range. A spike had been driven through it, rendering the old cannon basically useless, but the tiny hamlet was glad to have it as their one defensive weapon. They drove the spike out, leaving a touch-hole the size of a man’s thumb.

all this is inconsistent with the small salute cannon.

Also
Quote
was pulled by two yokes of Texas longhorns

Now pleeez, who's gonna believe it took all that steer power to pull the little salute cannon?
