If you have longer screws that fit the threaded holes, they can be shortened to filler screw length, with the outer end slotted for a fine screwdriver.
When I do something like that, I D/T a scrap 1/8" thick steel plate for the screw, thread it in so that another 1/8" sticks out the other side, then cut the old screwhead end off flush with the plate (file smooth).
Flip the plate over, slot the protruding end, cold blue it & install it.
If it's still too long, screw it back into the plate with one or two threads exposed on the far side of the plate and either file or grind off the excess.
The screw threads will be smoothed when it's unscrewed from the plate.
