NEF/H&R single shot Topper
« on: July 31, 2009, 12:04:32 PM »
Is the discoloration on the receiver case hardening?
I can't remember if I saw the same discoloration on the
rifle receivers sb2.  Are the rifle receivers stronger steel?

I'm tempted to get a topper shotgun. How long do these last?
If I happen to see a NEF rifle with the SB2 receiver used,
Can I have a shotgun barrel fitted?

Others will answer this better.
but Yes the discolor is Color case hardining.
the rest of the answers are available at the FAQ section.
But the firing pin hole is what makes one model shotgun, rifle, or rimfire.
Some rounds like the large primer pistol rounds (44 & 357) can be shot on the shotgun frames
shooting a 30-30 on that frame will cause some problems.
and the rimfire is self evident as it is off center and will not hit the primer on the center fire rounds.

The Topper with a case colored frame is likely too old to have an accessory barrel fitted, H&R won't fit any barrels to anything made before 1987, see the FAQs and Help sticky build year list. The frame is cast iron, SB2 frames are modern investment cast alloy steel, big difference in strength. H&R won't fit a 30-30 barrel to any SB1 cast iron frame....yet, they do however fit 357 and 44mags to SB1 frames made since 1987, maybe they'll eventually do the 30-30. Properly maintained and lubricated, they'll last a lifetime and then some.

And yes you can have a shotgun barrel fitted to a SB2 frame.
