Couple of questions about reloading for my 45-70

Bought two 45-70's last year, one BC and one regular 22" barrel.  Just recently got my brass, dies. and bullets so I could start reloading.  The Hornady ammo shoots pretty good in both but just like to roll my own.

The RCBS dies were available and in stock so that is what I bought.  My question is what seating stem are you using to seat the pointed bullets because the RCBS stem is for a round or flat nose bullets and  I bought the Barnes 300 TSX and the Hornady FTX bullets.  These of course are pointed and bullet alignment when seating may be a problem.

Next I have noticed that many on here like the Lee factory crimp die for this round.  I have crimped my .357 and .44 for revolvers but am wondering why crimp the 45-70 in a single shot ???

I use Hornady dies for pointed 45-70 bullets, the last time I needed a different seater plug for an RCBS die, I called RCBS, they said to send them a couple bullets and they would make one for me, but I just modified my own for it.

yeah, is crimping necessary for the handi? factory .45-70 ammo is so expensive, i may be forced to get back into handloading ...

Can't help you much on the seating plug (I use flat points and hollowpoints, may just have to drill it so it works with any bullet) but I can tell you there is probably no need for a different crimping die.  I have used the RCBS dies for my 45-70's for about 15 years with excellent accuracy.  If you aren't happy with your results, try Hornady 300gr. XTP's over Reloder-7.  I have had great results using this combo from 41 grains of powder in a Handi to 50.2 grains in my Browning High Wall.  As usual, these loads have worked in my guns, be careful with yours. Those are published loads, though I don't think I would go so far as 50.2 grains in a Handi, for safety reasons and the wake-up-call recoil.  BTW, the 41 gr. load drops deer really dead.

Ummm, Hornady doesn't make a .458" 300gr XTP, the 300gr XTP is a .452" pistol bullet, you must mean the 300gr HP.  ;)

Although I just found out my neighbor reamed his own 45-70 with a .452 barrel.  :o

How about a .452-120 for light speed!

Maybe .452" at the lands, I've dropped .452" bullets through all of my 45-70 barrels, 4 drop right thru, one needed some pushing which I chose not to push it on thru, it went part way down then stopped mid bore, every H&R bore I've slugged is .0005" tighter at the breech end than the muzzle, so that makes sense.

Hey Tim,

You're correct, I've been doing so much work with Dan Wesson 360's and Hornady bullets, I just threw in the "XTP" out of habit I guess.

won't  that  hurt  accuacy????

i  have  firelapped  40 rounds through my  handi  and it  is still  tight at the breech
won't that tight spot ''size''  a lead slug  and  allow  gas blowby  and  leading??

Thanks all for the responces.  Went to the RCBS web site and you can buy several different seating stems but did not see what I am looking for.  I will call like Tim said and see what I need to do for one to my specs.

I meant my neighbor did a 45-70 "wildcat" with a tighter bore specifically for .452 bullets.  He said it zooooomed the lighter pistol bullets out of there.
