If the rools say it can be a bottle neck cartridge, the 375 JDJ
If it has to be straight wall, 357 Max, 375 Win, 444 or 45/70
..

....Pretty sure the straight .444 is a no-go on the G2.  Could always do .44 Mag or .445 Supermag for .44 Caliber.  Not sure how flat either shoots, but those Hornady FTX bullets may be the answer to that.  I've always liked the idea of the .357-.44 Bain & Davis.  Add in those .357" FTX bullets from Hornady and you could have a downright interesting cartridge.

Would the "primitive weapons" rule even apply to smokeless cartridges?  Muzzle loaders, even in-line, I could see, but smokeless cartridges?  How are they defining "primitive", exactly?

357 Max is my choice. You can still shoot 357 mag and 38's in it too.

In MS I'm pretty sure the rules do NOT require it to be straight wall to be legal but am not positive on that. The .35 Remington if legal would be a very nice choice and if you want still more go with the .358 JDJ from SSK Industries. It is as flat shooting as any Condenter do able round of .35 and larger bore.

I'll ditto GB on the .35 Remington or .35 JDJ.  My 25-year-old factory .35 Remington barrel shoots pretty flat with 150 CoreLokts at 2330 fps, or 180 SSPs at 2150 fps.  The 200 CoreLokt at 2050 isn't as flat but has excellent terminal performance.  The JDJ will increase those speeds by ~150 fps.

If a straight-walled cartridge is required, then the .445 is the best choice for power and velocity in a Contender.  A 180 at 2000 fps or a 200 at 1925 fps out of a 10" barrel will hammer deer.  Add ~100-150 fps for a 15" custom barrel.

The .358 JDJ will beat the .35 Remington by a lot more than 150 fps. From a 14" barrel I had no trouble getting 2300 fps from 225s. From a rifle length barrel you should be able to get 2400 fps at least.

General Hunting Regulations and Requirements  for Ms.    Primitive Weapons include single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger)and must have exposed hammers and use metalic cartridges.    was considering maybe the 358jdj in maybe 20 in. range.  any one know how the trajectory would compare to the 375.

The .358 is much flatter especially comparing the 225s to Hornady 220 most use in the .375 JDJ. I used to use both the BT and PT but now I think the BT is discontinued and they make a 225 AB which would be even better. From a 20" barrel I'd expect you can get 2400 fps from the Nosler 225s.

I used to work with a guy from MS and I read the list of legal primitive cartrige rifles and a contender wasn't on the list. It's been a few years though they may have changed the rules again.

I believe it was two year ago they changed the rules to allow these and others such as the handi, I hunted with a N E 45-70 for the past two year, but I like the G2 so much better. I ordered the 358JDJ from SSK. now the wait is on. By the way, you can't hardly give a muzzle loader away in the state of Ms.

MS dumped the pre-1900 requirement, single shot hammer guns .35 cal or larger are legal. ;)
