Smokeless loads 45-70
« on: June 13, 2003, 08:23:17 AM »
Awhile back I was looking for a Smokeless load for 500gr lead in 45-70.Had H4198 but no data for it.So after some research I came up with 41.0grs Varget,Win brass,CCI 200,Javelina lube, 50/50 pure lead and WW's.and OAL 2.790" Man what a blast! Shot 7 rounds out of a H&R Buffalo Classic at a junkyard, darn things went through metal like it was butter...Can't wait to get to range and check out groups from sandbags.

Welcome to 45-70. Most people refer to it at the gun range as a cannon. I love it t though. I should mention that I prefer black powder. I can shoot about 20 factory loads with my Past recol pad and then I am too sore to shoot any more. I can shoot about 100 black powder rounds before I tire of it. The black poweder does not give the sharp kick but still gives the accuracyout to 125 yards or so. The biggest difference is you need to wash down the gun afterwards (at the range to keep the black gunk there and not on the garage floor) with soap and a bit of vinegar mixed to clean the bore.

Have fun with it.

Jim, try between 30 and 32 grains of IMR-4198 with no fiber wad.  I have had the best luck yet with that charge under a 500 grain RN bullet from Western Bullet Co. through my Buffalo Classic.  I may be heading to the range tomorrow.  I'll let you know if I get better results from a similar or different charge.

Varget and H4198 are my favorite powders for 45/70 although I use 405 gr LC's. I am sure there are good loads for 500 grs in H4198. Varget is rather hard to get at the moment.

I've worked up a good load using 2400.  If you look in one of those $6.00 booklets that you can buy from Midway or any other supplier you'll find the load range.  I've found that one load works very well and if I stray from it, the bullets stray just as fast.

Check one of those catalogs and you'll find a good load that should give you about 1350 to 1400 fps with a 500 grain bullet.
