Does 777 shorten barrel life?
« on: August 02, 2009, 02:13:38 AM »
I can recall in my days of reloading pistol cartridges, some folks avoided Bullseye like the plague. General feeling was that since it burned hot and fast, it shortened barrel life.

Any chance 777 has a similar sort of characteristic?

I wrote Hodgdon's asking basically, "How do you decide between 777 and Pyrodex?" along with a list of questions about points I thought were of merit in making the decision.  No answer at this point, been about a week.

If/when I get an answer, I'll be sure to post it.

I have fired an awful lot of Pyrodex and 777.  I do not believe that 777 shortens barrel life.  One would have to fire many thousands of rounds through a muzzleloader in order to wear out the barrel, especially when using sabots.

I like Pyrodex better than 777 because of the crud ring that 777 leaves.

I would agree with alsaqr on 777.

One thing I would like to add, Pyrodex is the most corrosive powder out there, so take that into consideration.
