I read the thread about the 357 being versatile (it is) and got to thinking about the 44 mags. If you ream a 44 mag to 445 supermag you could shoot (according to my book)...

44 Russian
44 Special
44 Magnum
445 Supermag

Is there any that I am missing?
It's not quite as versatile as the 357 but it comes close.

Yeah I would say they are just as versitale but there is just something about the .357s that really appeals to me. I have a .44 its a fine shooter, and I want a .45. I've shot .45 lever guns and SAAs liked both, However I tend to find a .357 on my hip and hanging from my shoulder more often than any other firearm I own and that's more than a couple.

Versatile? Absolutely. I feel many lean away from it in favor of the 357 because they think it recoils so much.... in a Handgun, yes... Single Shot Handi, No.
I have had 2 44Mag Handis and love it in a Handi. It's a very solid hitter and I can shoot it all day. 357's are hard to find and I personally do not have a 357, sure I entertain the idea a lot, but ya know what? I don't really need it.
My 44 can do ALL a 357 can and more so I have given up on looking for one (No trash talking here, just stating my feelings).
If ya like what you shoot..then shoot it. Calibers are offered in so many offerings because someone felt the need for another ones use over another. Find YOUR need I say. My need here in the mountains of VA might not exactly be someones need in the valleys of AZ for example.
Hell if you want to shoot snakes with a 308 be my guest.. just let me know

My first Handi was the older 357 mag , fun and cheap to shoot , easy to reload for too .. And my other half loved it because of its lack of recoil .. I must admit at the time I know without a doubt that I would use a 357 magnum loaded handgun for home/self defense , but I wasnt too sure of it on bear , Black bear in particular.. They are plentiful up where we hunt , Her uncle a few years back got bull rushed by a big male blackie during muzzle loader season and thankfully was able to make the shot and make it count... I have that thought in my head now and I had it then.. So a year ago when she asked me to find her a new hunting rifle , the only stipulation she had was it had to be a lever action .. And left the rest up to my knowledgable judgement .. Searching high and low I couldnt find a lever action 44 mag ... And we ended up walking into a buddies shop , low and behold there sat a Win. 94 AE saddle hooped 16 1/2 barrelled 357 mag for $275 , Well needless to say it went home with me and I dont see us getting rid of it anytime soon.. Great little rifle , But even with hot 180g handloads ( i know what your thinking " if shes in a tree ?" She is afraid of heights and refuses) ... I'm still not 100% comfortable with its bear stopping ability ... So while versitile as hell the 44 mag will always hold more versitility for me and my needs.. While I have the handi 44 , she wants a lever and cant fault her logic.

So for me I find the forty four the more versitile for my hunting applications , If we are punching paper or water jugs , the occassional possum , dilo , yote etc. then the 357 mag wins ...
For everything from bunnies to elk the forty four will always get my vote for more versitile

Do both, Handi barrels are cheap.

My new 44 shot great with my .44 special handloads (one big hole at 50 yards).

And the .357 will go 3" or less with irons at 100.

which includes that 32 mag.

And yeah , you can lie to your mom, lie to your boss, hell lie to your wife , but you cant lie to yourself ... You sure do need that big ol' 44

What sort of 44 special (commercial) loads are y'all using? I've recently acquired a 44 mag with deer and hogs as the intended target with 240 SP, and would like to expand its range to smaller game.
