.38/40 Win 12" Octagon TCA barrel
« on: July 27, 2009, 05:12:12 PM »
A couple months ago I stumbled on a Contender barrel I had never heard of, a 12" octagon in .38/40 Win made for the Collectors Association. Have never seen or heard of another one and wondered if anyone here had one or had any experience with one. I'm in the process of working up a heavy, deer capable load for mine.

Thanx, Russ

I haven't gotten "modern" yet as far as posting pics (haven't even bought a digital camera yet) but my techno buddy is going to help me soon. I'll post pics when the time comes.

You can get some of the 200 grain LFN bullets from Montana Bullet Works.  Load these ahead of 14.0 grains of HS-6 and it'll knock a plug out of a whitetail.

:)  I've heard of it, just not in Contender barrels. The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook lists it, as a rifle load.
Lyman #40188 170 grn bullet or Lyman #40143 172 grain bullet.
This is a Winchester Model 92 caliber.

I shoot 38-40 revolvers and rifles for Cowboy Action Shooting. Its a great true old west caliber.
The 38-40 is basically ballistically equivalent to a 40 S&W at .401.

Check the Hodgdon web site for load data with different bullets.

I shoot Bear Creek 180 gr cast bullets. I'm sure you can find a jacketed soft point for your deer loads.

Good Luck - let me know if you want to part with it!
