Birmingham Alabama in the news
« on: August 03, 2009, 11:37:59 AM »
I just read that Birmingham, or the county it's in, is firing 2/3 of its government workers. That's touching. I've long thought that the government was about 3 times as big as it should be. I wish Washington DC would do something like that.

The IDIOTS running the Jefferson Count Commission especially Betty Fine Collins are the ones who should be fired. They borrowed far more money than they could ever repay to build a sewer system that only a small percentage of the folks in the county even use. Combine that with dumb spending on schools and the county is bankrupt but refuse to declare bankruptcy. They seem to think someone should bail them out. They've about run out of people to beg to bail them out however.

BTW the commission isn't taking any reduction in pay them selves. They really should be jailed not just fired. The mayor of B'ham is highly likely to see jail time soon.

Thanks, GB. It seems like they had a scheme that depended on good times and good revenue. That dependency failed, and the "house of cards collapsed". Yes, anything that results in firing 2/3 of a county work force is symptomatic of wildly irresponsible decision making, and the people who made those decisions should be considered at fault.

It's kind of hard to believe, though. Birmingham is a really big metro area? What is it, about a million people?

I'm not sure really Rudy but don't think there are nearly a million in B'ham city but might be in Jefferson County as a whole. It's not the City that's bankrupt tho they too aren't far from it. The county is the one in trouble and firing all the folks.
