Author Topic: What will repel deer from flowers and shrubs?????? (Read 3107 times)

My girlfriend has planted flowers around the front of the house and some new trees. Every few days, the deer come along and eat the flowers and leaves off of the little trees. I have heard there are chemical treatments to keep them away, anything simple we could buy in our little town. These deer are quite tame, she tried to chase one away from the cherry tree, the doe ran into the street about 10 yards and stood like she was waiting for us to leave. The she calmly went into the next yard and ate the neighbors flowers.

I really don't care what they eat, but my girlfriend gets really irate.

I've found that a .30-06 or .44 magnum both do an excellent job of it. Other than that I think you're mostly kidding yourself with remedies to keep them away.

that should get rid of the deer they wont hang out with the coyotes. LOL

1. empty your vacuum cleaner bag around where you don't want the deer to be.
2. Keep a dog in the area.
3. Blend 6 raw eggs in a quart of water , put it in a spray bottle, and spray onto plants. It makes a yucky taste that will help dissuade the pesky critters.
4. Hang up some Irish Spring soap in a mesh bag in the area.
5. If it won't bother the neighbors, play hard rock to repel them.
6. Cover plants with bird netting.
7. Put some of your dirty laundry in the area.( I use a T-shirt Iv'e had a good sweat in)
8. Electric fencing.
The only way to reliably keep the deer from eating your stuff is either an 8' high fence, or shoot them. I've been blessed this year with minimal damage to my garden from the deer. The dang beasties get me so mad when they do their mischief I get very tempted to shoot them,or worse!

One last thought regarding your particular situation. It seems the deer are VERY used to being near people. Use that to your advantage and get some pepper spray. When Bambi, and Faleen start munching spray em right in the mouth if you can. After you do this to them a few times I'm pretty sure they will not want eat at your house anymore.

My friend got his mother in MT a paint ball gun to knock the deer out of the garden.
All she had was deer with paint marks. More of a mild soap goop mark than bright paint like in the movies.

You should hang a tree stand nearby. Deer never come anywhere near the places I hang my stand. It seems to be a great deterent.

When I was in College I was driving around the farm and there were these, for lack of better words Key ways cut into the corn.
I could turn down them in my cherokee and they would be 30 yards or so with a huge circle at the end.
One day I ran into the farmer that leases the land and aksed him what makes that. I thought it was the local hunt club that would pull thier pick up in and shoot from the office chairs they had bolted on the dog box in the back.
Was told NO it was the black bear that would walk into the field with his arms out and scoop up and push all the corn he could in front of him till he could not push any farther then sit down and eat the corn. then roll around and get what ever he could till he was full then walk back out the same way. After a while I walked to the back of my jeep and looked at hopw wide it was and wondered how big of a bear could push corn wide enough that I did not hit my mirrors for 30 yards into the green corn field.
I never go anywhere on the farm now with out a gun.

mc, I have heard of bear destroying much corn when I was in Pa. and W. Va. We don't here of that here, because there is not much corn in Wy.

Interesting story. The deer eating the flowers does not bother me much, but my girlfriend is really hacked about it. I am more concerned about cats killing the rabbits and birds. When I walk each morning mostly before sunup, I see several cats hunting. They are "tame" cats the owners leave out all nite.

When it gets a bit colder and I don't have to contend with skunks in my trap, the cat hunt will commence

As for the deer, I would sooner see them than flowers, but............................ $:-\$

I have a friend who truck farms. He has tried sprays, repellents, dogs, radios playing in the field all night, reflective mirrors and cds in the trees and a host of things to numerous to mention here. Two things worked. 1.) Eradication permit, and 2.) The shotgun and slugs I loaned him. Got a freezer full.

I have lived in places that my .22 Hornet would have eliminated the problem immediately

scoop up the hair from the barbershop. spread it around the base of the trees and garden out to about 5 feet. If that does not stop them, then you better get a knife, sit in the shadows waitingk, and cut their throats when they come in the night. At first light you will be out cold asleep, there will be pretty flowers, and plenty of fresh venison in the freezer.
