Wasp Spray for Personal Defense.......
« on: July 23, 2009, 06:03:17 AM »
Has anyone heard of using wasp spray for personal defense?  I recently read that it is very effective and can be used to blind a person from a distance of 20 feet.  According to the article, after being sprayed the perp would have to go to a hospital for an antidote to prevent blindness.

It also said it could be used on dogs or wild animals with great success.  Even so,  with man or beast I would still like my “back-up” readily available.

Truthfully, never heard of wasp spray. I imagine a lot of chemicals would be effective. Heard a story from a corrections officer that took a cup of bleach to the eyes in an escape attempt. Temporarily blinded instantly. He had to fight blind, was able to keep the guy there long enough for back up to join and keep him from escaping. Advised it took 3 days to get vision back. I imagine acetone/mineral spirits/paint thinner would be very effective as well. Food for thought if in the shop or kitchen and have no weapon within reach. May give you the edge to get to one a few steps away.

All the good hydrocarbons have been removed from wasp spray now! most of it is some sort of detergent that will suffocate a wasp if enough of it gets on him.

I trust I wont be using soap to fend off an attack of a wild animal or human!

I never would have thought of wasp spray as a defensive measure, but if you read the labels on the containers it's full of all kinds of nasty poisons.

I've also heard of using a fire extinguisher.  After you give the attacker a face ful of dry chemical, you then use the empty container to beat him senseless.

GH1:  Actually, Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch has shown people how to use a fire extinguisher in just that manner and it will work great if you hit them hard enough with it after foaming their faces.  It is best to use it in a 'buttstroke' application, becase if you swing it at them it is liable to drop from your hand when you bean them with it....

Ariel:  two popints.  There is a fellow teaching self defense in Minneapolis, I believe and he also uses Wasp spray and advocates it as a 'non-deadly alternative'.  And, William Layton is quite correct - Wasp and Hornet Spray is very, very flamable and the technique is to use the spray to first stop or delay a attacker or two and then if necessary, flik your Bic to heat up the situation.  These sprays advertize a 20-30 foot spray and if you have ever used that stuff you will know it has deadlier chemicals than just detergents to cause wasps/hornets to lose their grips and fall down - the stuff is instantly debilitating.  And yes, adding fire to the fuel is pretty midevil but so is attacking you with a knife or club.....  jmtcw.

All I know is that in years past when you hit a wasp nest with wasp spray they fell off dead like rain!

Now they fly off, stumble around and walk around on the ground, maybe they die, some do, but they dont drop anymore. Now I know that I am not imagining that.

I was told that the "good stuff" was removed by the EPA! Spray em if ya wanna!

The good stuff in my pistol is still there!

I don't know about the lighter and wasp spray, but I do know a lady that prevented a rapist from taking advantage of her with a lighter and can of hair spray.  He slipped in her house while she was in the shower and tried to rape her, she grabed a lighter and her hair spray that was nearby and lit him up.  The police said they didn't have any problem locating him afterwards, his face was burned bad and all the hair on one side of his head was gone.

The wasp spray is not something that I would keep as a deterent, but for those that won't use a firearm it is an option, just be careful with the lighter and don't burn the house down  I might spray a few of my bullets with it................. ::)

Another thing I heard of..not so far reaching, but still effective, is  EASY OFF oven spray..bad stuff. ..but that was years ago, don't know about now.
I am assuming you are looking for something to have around the house when someone does not have a CCW...I was at my local RV/marine dealer the other day and saw a plastic flare pistol such as boaters use to signal for assistance. I don't suppose they are illegal to have, especially if one boats or hikes now & then....but the flare could I assume, could disrupt some intruder's plans.

This is the best thread I had read in a long time. Love it.

And to think of all the crap that I have inavertantly sprayed or otherwise got in my eyes that makes me instantly wish I hadn't been in such a hurry. Our shop now has to be the most dangerous place in the word to be a mugger.

Vodka?  The cheap stuff like bankers club or Nikoli might, but the Stoli and Grey goose doesn't work.  I can't get it out of my mouth...

For personal defense, always watch the professionals when you looking for the best solution to a problem  ;)   The army and police continue to spray bad guys with lead  ;D

Sometimes you have to make use of what's at hand. Some household chemicals can be pretty effective. I wouldn't want one to be my "A" plan.

The wasp spray I have in my shed is relatively new, does not kill wasps, after a moment or so of flapping their wings they are back up again.  IMHO it would just make a bad guy mad.  I'd rather just run until I can pick up a heavy object if I'm un-armed.  The method in the quote above is still the most effective.
