t/ maxi hunter question

hello all, i've got a t/c hawken that i have shot the maxi hunter conicals out of for years and had good luck with them. my question is a buddy just gave me about 200 of these bullets that are quite old and the bore butter is hard and cracked on these. what can i do to get this old lube off , and whats the best way to relube. i would be grateful for any ideas or suggestions thanks Donnie

The best way I can think of to get the lube off, would be to perhaps toss them in a brass tumbler for a few minutes.  Failing that, a wire brush and some time and elbow grease ought to do the trick.

As far as re-lubing them, that's a bit more work.  When I used to cast them, I made up a batch of my own wax lube, poured it over them in a shallow pan, let the wax cool a bit, then picked the bullets out and pushed them through a hole in a piece of wood to get rid of the excess lube.

I'd set em on an old cookie sheet in a warm oven <200º to soften the old lube.

Shot those Maxi-balls in my first year of muzzle loading cause I could only get a couple three shots with patched balls before cleaning was necessary. I would lube them one at a time and just before loading.

The Maxi-hunter came out a few years latter in responce to hunters wanting a little more expansion on a deer rather than a pass through @ bore diameter. I never shot any of these as I did go with the patched ball exclusively upon that 2nd year.

Is kind of ironic, thinking back about many hunters wanting expansion from a .500 slug cast from pure lead but todays handgun shooter figures that a hard cast bullet with a bore diameter of .430 or .452 (in my case)is the ideal ticket!

I think that this say's that Shot Placement is #1 which I always reckoned to be true anyway.
