.375 H&H problrms
« on: July 25, 2009, 04:56:25 PM »
Bought a Remington XCR in this caliber a couple of years ago to celebrate.  It's great shooter, but I'm having trouble with my cases after only 1-2 reloads.  I understand this is normal, and this is my first belted catridge in 35 years of reloading.   I'm saving for that special die to size the back of the case.   What I'd like to know is:  Are these cases ruined, or can they be rehabilitated?

What kind of trouble? head separations? When you size belted mags ,you don't size all the way down. this moves the shoulder too far back.

Yea, what kind of problem?

I bought that "special die" a couple of years ago and have yet to have any need to use it.  I would spend the money on something else if I were you.

First reload of Remington once fires, I full-length resized.  No problems.  Second reload, I sized only to where the neck meets the shoulder, yet the cartridge does not fire. No firing pin dent, either.  Looks like the case bulges just enough to let the case go past the rim.  Are these cases lost forever?

Is the firing pin broken? Does the round chamber with a slight resistance or no resistance at all? Seem like if you can get the round to chamber ok,and it cocks the striker upon closing it ought to go bang if the pin is ok. As far as the bulge do you mean the ring around the case,or an actual bulge where it should not be?

Are you cleaning the primer pockets allowing the new primer to seat fully?

Have you tired to full length size the case and not just neck size?

Does the bolt close fully even with this bulge?

You might want to get that Remmy checked out by a competent "smith"!

"Looks like the case bulges just enough to let the case go past the rim"

That makes no sense.  Sit down and re-read your reloading manual.  It sounds like you are not resizing properly.  If the round is fully chambering, and wont fire - no dent in the primer, then you have a problem with the rifle.  Try a factory round - does it fire?  If so, its your reloads - READ THE MANUAL

I'll have to agree on the gunsmith!
If the bolt will go home all the way and the shells don't go bang, there's a problem.
