Need to move scope to the rear
« on: April 06, 2010, 01:31:59 PM »
Having bought a "lightly used over the years", Weatherby Vanguard in 7mm, I mounted a scope. I had purchased the scope from Singapore. It's a Tasco, 3X9x40 mm with illuminated reticule. Cost me forty bucks, including shipping. I also bought some rings which fit Weaver mounts.

I got the Weaver mounts locally and put the whole mess together. The problem now is the scope is simply too far forward for me to get a full field of view. I need some mounts which are set back a bit. I haven't measured just how far I need to set it back, but I'm fairly confident it will be less than an inch.

Where could I find such mounts and how would they be described? The standard mounts I bought locally were ~$10. I don't fancy spending $30 - $60 for a couple of tiny pieces of Aluminum. If I can't find some off the shelf, I'll clean the junk off my Harbor Freight drill press/mill and make them.

But, if I can get them for a reasonable price, I'll save my time for the range. I'd rather be shooting than machining.  8)

Anyone have any suggestions? I've already looked at the usual suspects - Cabela's, Brownells, Midway, Numrich, & Warne's.

Might want to reconsider that scope. Is it a 7mag?  If your scope doesn't have a lot of eye relief, the recoil may give you a black eye. Just sayin'....

Yah. 7 rem mag. The scope has plenty of eye relief. Long story, though. I'm older than your average bear at 68. They've got me on lots of blood thinners, so I must use recoil protection, else I get bruised far beyond my shoulder. So, unless I cut off the stock (not an option) I am a far piece away from the scope.

Beside's, I ain't had a good dose of scope eyebrow for twenty years. Might be time.   ;D

$40 scopes may not hold up to 7mag recoil

What you want are extended or extension or offset rings.  Do a search on ebay and see what you get.  Larry

Aha! Muchas Gracias, Larry. That's just the ticket. All along I was thinking about a modified mount and the answer was in the rings!

Now that I see them, I remember running across this very same issue many years ago - and the rings were the answer then, too. Getting old and forgetting things is a Rosie O'Donnell.

Thank you.

I guess I should ask - does anyone have one Weaver or Weaver mount-compatible extension ring sitting around in your "possibles" box? I'd sure like to trade you something for it - even cash. No sense buying new if I can find an old one.

Have you tried moving the scope all of the way to the rear? 1. Most weaver mounts have two or three locations so you can just shift it. 2. You can also try moving the scope further back in the rings. Do'nt push it too far back into the rings where the rings hit the flare of the scope.

Joe .......

The scope is as far to the rear as the bell will allow.

By the way - I should correct my error - the scope was fifty bucks delivered, not forty. Maybe I told SWAMBO it was forty to ease the pain. Here's where I bought it, along with three sets of rings for $9.00 each.

 http://www.qualitychinagoods.com/tasco-39x40e-green-illuminated-rangefinder-riflescope-p-1074.html

I just happened to think, if I do find someone who has an extension ring - or a set of two of them - I might need to know the ring height. When I went in the safe to get the Weatherby, I took a peek at my Winchester Featherweight ought-six. Darned if it doesn't have a Weaver extension ring on the front! I thought I'd run into this before. I set up the '06 back in 1985 or so. I checked the eye relief on it and it wouldn't hurt to move the scope 3/8" or so to the front.

If I can't find another extension ring, I'll bet I could swap rings with the Weatherby.

The scope looks a little clunky compared to the sweet lines of the Leupold 3 x 9 on the Featherweight, but is a heck of a lot less expensive. What appears to be scratches or nicks on the rings is a bit of squeezed-out threadlock fluid I haven't cleaned off yet.

That way, I'd have two rifles to sight in. Darn the luck! I'd have to spend at least two trips to the range for each rifle.  ;D

Problem solved!

I purchased, bedded and installed a Boyd's laminated stock on the rifle. It is about 5/8" shorter in the buttstock that the factory original. This brings my eye comfortably to the scope and I have a full field of view. Besides, it's a lot prettier now.

Ok I must be missing something here  ???. a cheap alloy extension ring was too much but a new stock was not?  :-\

Oh well it take all sort I suppose.

Now I only hope four your sake that that Tasco is not like the one I had. The fast ficuse eye piece flopped about in the eye bell and if that's the case you will spend a fortune chasing the bullets holes around as each shot the POI will move. I was only trying it on a .22 rimfire. If I recall right mine was a3-9x40E and what a piece of junk it was.

I agree hope that Tasco doesn't go south on you. When tasco's were made in Japan they were really well made as a matter of fact they are still bringing hight dollar forthe jap made scopes, but China timbuctoo Etc you will at some time have to throw it away. At 60 something you should know you only get what you pay for. I have you beat at 73 years young LOL. Buy a quality scope such as leupold, they have been making a cheaper model of thier 3X9X40's at a real good price and a lifetime guarantee. Even if you buy aused one and it fails they will fix it free. Now that is a deal in it's self. Lou
