Which is more ethical in the hunting fields, and safer. The sportsman whom spots his game at 350 to 450 yd, takes some time with the binocs to appraise the trophy and study the terrain. He then assumes the prone position, sets the bipod, and checks the laser range finder one more time. Now that all conditions are perfect, the crosshair is steady on his aiming point, he pauses before touching the trigger to reconoiter any stay breezes. He thinks about breath control and gently carresses his trigger.

Compare this to the woods hunter whom sees his trophy bounding through the trees and snaps his 30-30 to his shoulder and snaps off a round as if he were jump shooting quail.

Tough call.  I guess it all depends on how good each shooter really is.  Perhaps the "woods hunter" is very good at snapping off rounds like at deer with his .30-30.  Perhaps the long distance hunter is also very good at taking long shots.

I do understand your point, though.  I just think that it depends on a variety of factors.

Long Range Shots
« Reply #32 on: January 12, 2003, 09:05:45 PM »
I've hunted the heavy woods of the Cascade Range in Washington State and much would much rather hunt the open country of the Mts of Idaho and Utah.  I have never shot at a Whitetail and don't know if I ever will.  I have only been able to walk off the distance to any deer I have taken only once ore twice.  I have not been able to walk from one side of the canyon to the other in a straight line.

I've only taken proably 4 or 5 deer at ranges under 100 yards. All the others have been out there a bit further.

Agreed most hunters cant tell how far a deer is but there are ways other than laser range finders.  I haven't been able to justify to the wife the price of a laser range finder.   She has seen how I shoot at out to well over 100 yards.  I don't miss a lot, it takes the fun out of the paractice if you miss.  I like to go up into the mtns. and pick on rocks across canyon at unkown distances and see what I can do to them.

Longest shot at a deer was 145yds with a rifle.  Longest with pistol was 375yds at a coyote.  Hit both, got the deer but lost the coyote.  Average shots are under 75yds.

TCShooter,

300 plus yards with a pistol?   That's a pretty remarkable shot at the coyote.  What cartridge were you shooting?  Where did you hit it? (was it where you aimed?)

Granted , I hunt in the northeast.  My longest shot was 90 yards, and my shortest was at 6 yards with a bow.  Average is about 60 yards.  Now I hunt to hunt not shoot. I personally enjoy the challenge of hunting up as close as I can to the animal, to me that is the challange. This is after all not life and death (for us) , we do it for our own enjoyment. I own a couple of contender barrels and a couple off rifles that shoot sub MOA, and my club has a 500 yd range that I shoot on. Most places I hunt, you can't see 100 yards. Of course a lot of my hunting is with a handgun or a bow.   If I lived out in the west I imagine I would hunt differently.

RD,

Did I read you right? - You made a 410 yard shot with an Encore in 7mm-08?

Tell us a little more about this shot.

Thanks Zachary.  It was 375yrds as per a range finder after the fact. :?    I was shooting a 15" 7mm-08.  I was aiming maybe a foot above center mass and hit it in the hind quarters (guess he was moving a bit faster than I thought).  I don't usually take shots like that but the farmer asked us to shoot any we saw due to some damage he said they did to to a sheep.

RD and TCShooter,

I am very impressed with both of you guys. :D

Not only are both of you shooting pistols, but also the 7mm-08 cartridge.  The 7mm-08 is one of my all time favorite cartridges, but I didn't think it could have that kind of performance from a pistol (even one with a 15" barrel).

What happened to your respective animals after you shot them?  I suspect that the bullets didn't expand too much.  Did you recover the bullets?  How far did the animals run after you shot them?

My longest shot was with a 300 win mag years ago on a mule deer out west. The distance walked off 3 times by two different people was over 470 yards, give or take 10 yards. I had a great Belgium Browning rifle back then, it was a terrific rifle for shooting far out.

Most of my shots on whitetails would average under 100 yards and the closest would be less than 20 feet, when a deer tried to sneak pass me while I sat nest to a tree during a light drizzle over by Hardy Arkansas.

Well, I lost the coyote so I have no idea.  A deer I took with it last year was at 40yrds, lung shot passed through and she ran about 20yrds.

Longest shot - about 80 yards, average 30 yds.  I run a sight in weekend and try to get eveyone to sight in to exactly on at 50 yards.  Here in the Catskills if you can get honest answers most deer are shot at under 40 yards, with anything over 100 being pretty rare.  Yea, I know most don't want to believe it but after 40 years deer hunting here I am pretty sure.
What I have seen is that the "average" hunter (not talking about serious guys like ourselves) can't even shoot a good group from the bench at 100 and shooting offhand at a deer target at 80 they miss completely about 1/2 the time and make a wounding shot 8 out of 10 on the ones they hit.

The longest shot I have ever made was done with confidence at 350 yards. I had been practicing at a target at that distance at the end of my field from the house. It just so happens that a pair of deer were feeding in the morning at about 15 yards to the left of the target area. It was pretty easy to level off at the same distance I was used to shooting. My Remington 700 BDL was topped with a Burris 2.5X10x 50mm scope. It looked like the deer was about 50 yards away at full zoom. I made several in the 300-325 mark but that was the longest I have made on a deer. They all have hit the kill zone. I have since sold ny 7 mag and taken up using a smaller 30/30 to put the sport back into hunting. Before if i could see it, it was dead. Now I have to get allot closer. Great question, I'm anxious to see the results. it should be noted that i live in Mississippi and have plenty of long range shots to take. The average Joe may only have 100yard shots to take to begin with. Thanks and have a good one.

Longest shot was paced at 465 paces. My hunting pace (as in a slow trudge) is short. This distance converts to 359 yards based on my trudging the halls at work. The halls are covered with 12 inch tile which make it easy to determine an average pace.
I was shooting prone in a thick bed of post oak leaves so it was like shooting off a nice cushy mat. I got the elevation exactly right, the tough part was estimating the drift due to a slight breeze. I held 10 inches into the wind, the bullet drifted 14 inches and hit 4 inches behind where I held. I got a nice buck with one shot but I will not take that kind of shot again. This was with a 6MM Remington. The year before I shot a buck across the same field at a slightly shorter distance with a 25/06. The 25/06 was dramatically more effective but there was no wind blowing that day either.

The longest shot that I have ever taken... well that would be 500 meters... but that was at paper targets and back when I was in the military  :-D

The  longest shot that I have ever taken while hunting...  well that would only be about 35 yards! Believe it or not I have never hunted with either a rifle or a shotgun. I have only been hunting on a few occasions and they were all handgun hunts.  :)

Most of my shooting is done at the local range. I guess that I need to get out and hunt more

Can't see over 100 yds usually in Adirondacks so you are limited by cover and hellacious terrain. Still prepared to shoot out to 300 with Sendero 300WM or 1B 7RM. Both shoot MOA off cross sticks to 300 with 165 gr. Partition and 162 SPBT. Ready for long shot but reality is 40 yds is most common. So farthest is 150 yds. Closest is 3 feet with bow on ground. Damn buck turned into me after shot and almost got me. Uncle still thinks I killed him from tree since entry was so high on chest of deer. Keep laminated card with drops and wind drift on stock. Toughest part is to estimate cross drift long distance. I shoot 1,000 rounds a year but prefer to get up close and personal. Much bigger rush when you see the whites of their eyes! Some day I will get the long shot and will be prepared but more likely the shots will keep getting closer. They usually don't run to far when inside 50 yds.

My longest shot has been 350 yards (paced) at an antelope, using a good rest.  I was using my 25-06 shooting 100 grain Nosler BT.  To be honest, I am not a big fan of long shots, especially in excess of 300 yards, especially on a windy day.  Can't begin to tell you how many wounded deer and antelope I have seen shot by "hunters" shooting at extreme ranges with their new .500 wizbangs.  Its just unethical!

wyo hunter,

First off, WELCOME ABOARD! :D

Second, let me tell you that I totally agree.  I firmly beleive that hunters should only shoot at distances that they practice, give or take a certain percentage.  For example, if a hunter goes to the range and shoots at 100 yards, then he/she shouldn't take shots past, say, 200 yards or so.  If he shoots a target at 200 yards, then he/she shouldn't take a shot past, say, 250 or so.  The problem is, that shooters practice at 100 yards, then rely on the ballistic tables from the ammo catalog, and think that they can shoot out to 500 yards.  Well, assuming that the ballistics are indeed correct for your given rifle, shooting at 500 yards, or even 400 yards, or even 300 yards, is a lot different that shooting at 100 yards.  In addition to holding a gun steady, there are just too many other variables to take into consideration when making such a shot.

I don't understand what's going on with this thread.

It was started long ago as an AVERAGE shot. Now it seems the title showing is for LONGEST shot and says NEW POLL.

If we're gonna do a new poll and ask a new question it needs to be a new thread.

The longest shot I have ever taken on a game animal was on a moose at 400 meters accross a small lake. I was standing in waist deep grass so I had to make the shot off-hand. 9 times out of 10 I would have never of let that one fly but at this particular instant everything came together. The moose stopped moving, the wind ceased , my cross hairs settled high on the shoulder just as the trigger broke. As it turns out I hit him in the heart (lucky) but thats about right for bullet drop on a 300 wby. Sometimes things just come together.

One mule deer at about 325 and almost everything else within 100 meters.

Gosh, it's been so long since I first created this post that I didn't recognize the discrepency. :)   Actually, this poll is about a year old - I'm surprised there is a renewed interest to revive it. :-)

I went ahead and took out the poll and just left the title as "longest shot."

the longest shot i have ever on a deer was at 440 yards measured with a laser rangefinder.  normally shots are between 75 and 200 yards.  my shooting buddy add i shoot out to 600 yard at the range.  that is only at paper.  the longest shot on a piece of paper was 1000 yards missed it horribly.  one day maybe at paper but never at game animals.

I believe in one golden rule of shooting long distance which I practice out to 400 yds (elk hunting) is that you never hold off an animal for POA. If the animal is farther than your POA on their spine then it becomes a crap shoot. My rifles are sighted in at 250 yds which gives me a LOS aim out to 300 of <4.0". Even my 300 WM with 200 gr. Accubonds hold <4.0" at 300 and 14" at 400 which is perfect POA on spine.  I feel strongly if you have a POA on "air" then you are not giving the animal the respect it deserves. Hunt better and get closer or pass on the "no shot". I won't even call a POA on air a shot in my book. I'd rather eat a $450 elk tag then cripple one at 500 yds.  Animals can move only 6" just when you pull the trigger and there goes your shot. There is flight time to consider in these long shots and it is a factor that cannot be ignored. For every animal killed at long distance (>400 yds), I'd bet there is one wounded and lost.
