I will be taking a ccw course in the next week. Trying to decide on which model 45 acp to buy. I want a double action. At one time I had a sig 220. Loved it . I have not kept up with the other models available for the last few years . So does anyone have any suggestions. Looking used. around 500.00 Is that realistic? I look forward to your suggestions. Bill

I have an XD and it's very heavy. I have a Smith Airweight which is my summer wear. I also have a Glock G36 for winter. I recommend the G36 for carry;except in the summer.

If you already know you like the 220, then that's the one for you. You should be able to find a used one for a good bit under $500.

For $500 I would look at the used sigs.
I think I picke up a P229 in 9mm not too long ago for a little more than that.
There are also a flood of the Sig P-6 from the German police we call them the P-225 that would be a good gun to take to the class.
It is a 9mm but for the $500 you will walk out the door with one. And depending you may also be able to get a Plastic holster.
there are some mags available. This will give you a gun small and compact for for CCW and one that you are familiar with the opperation, controls and take down procedures in 9mm for the class. Shooting the pistol all day the 9mm may be cheaper as well as less punnishing for the whole day of shooting. 9mm is not a bad round for carry with one of the defense designed projectiles.

The Glock g36 is 45 acp; but, is that caliber a requirement? Open your mind to other possibilities. How much shooting have you done with handguns? You can rent handguns at a lot of ranges. I've done that and ruled out some of the handguns I thought I wanted. Also, if you're stuck on 45 acp I'd recommend the Federal 165 gr managed recoil ammo for carry. I find it's much more controllable that 230 gr., hi velocity loads.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. The 45 is my choice, I shot one alot while in the service. ( model 1911 ) . Then bought the sig after discharge. My only regret was getting rid of it for a new rifle.

I know it's a leap; but, once you go Glock, you won't go back. I made that leap and I'm still happy; except, it's large and bulky for summer wear.

in black guns ive allways favored sigs but the new m&ps are very nice guns. I dont like xps there big blocky and the ones ive shot have had spotty reliability. I hate glocks but its just a metal thing as i cant argue that there not good guns. Best bang for the buck is probably a ruger. there nothing special to look at but they are very reliable.

If you're going to CCW, then the 220 is a bit big. Assuming that .45 ACP is a requirement(limiting your load out to one caliber is a good thing these days), then I would suggest either of the compact GLOCK .45's(i.e. GLOCK 30 or GLOCK 36). There is also Kahr's

also hear good things about Taurus's PT145.

Go to a range and rent a pistol. I did and found I cannot tolerate giant calibers in itty bitty handguns. Also, this ain't 1975 anymore. The 9 mm ammo available today is stout stuff and commonly used for defense. Last; but, not least. for practice a glock or XD will shoot cheap CCI, 9MM practice loads all day. Spend your money and practice some on your defense loads. I also recommend joining the IDPA, their competitions will make you proficient. This objective advice from the guy with a Glock 36 and a Smith Airweight.

I have no requirements from the ccw people. In fact I will use a 22 buckmark for the class. I have always liked the 45 acp. I did own a couple 9mm's but it was back in the day. ( mod. 39 & 59 S&W ). I was not all that impressed with them . I liked the 39 the most. I will see if there is a range around here that has handguns for rent. Sounds like a very good idea. Thank you all very much. Bill

Sig P220 is not too large for Concealed carry---or is a Government----even in summer.

YUP yore right, Speedo's and Thongs for folks in my age bracket are verbotten, for more reasons than just fashion.

I don't advocate scabbards either.

Think we are in the same bracket ,
I tried the sigs and colts , for me they were to big to carry and work at the same time so i ended up with a S&W bodyguard then a 640 . The big guns worked as long as i didn't have to work .
