S&W Model 617
« on: July 23, 2009, 04:03:41 PM »
I have a model 617. I have not had a chance to shoot it yet. But I do have some questions. I know S&W makes very strong revolvers. Are there any type ammo that should not be shot in this gun? I know each gun will shoot different types of ammo better, than another will. I know I need to find the ammo my revolver shoots the best. But I was wondering what types of ammo do any of you use? What I am looking for is some ammo to try without buying alot of different ammo. My family is on a budget now, when it comes to dollars. Any help will be appreciated...Ray

you may not want to shoot cci stingers becuase they are slightly longer than standard 22lr. but i only heard that this may be problematic in auto's so it might not pertain to revolvers.

Any and all types of .22LR ammo are suitable for use in it. Shoot ONLY .22LR in it.

Gentleman, Thanks for the information. I have a few different brands of ammo on hand, I wasn't sure which to try. In my other rimfires, the CCI have shot pretty well. Again Thanks, Ray

Before you can expect top accuracy, you will probably need to break-in the barrel. They tend to be a little rough as they come from the factory. I like to use high speed, copper wash stuff to smooth and burnish the barrel. 500 to 1000 rds. may be necessary. Your CCI MiniMag should be fine. After that, you can expect to shoot lead, standard speed stuff well, with little to no leading.

617s make great surrogate guns: guns in the same barrel length and nearly the same weight that substitute for centerfire guns. With price and availability of ammo being what it is at the moment, I shoot a lot more .22 than anything else.

The 617 should shoot any .22LR you can stuff in the cylinder. Some will be dirty, some will be harder to eject, some will be more accurate. I would just shoot the copper plate cheap stuff for a couple of thousand times and see how it shoots after that. My go-to ammo in almost all .22's is CCI - SV or Mini-Mag.

Be aware that partially burned powder granules can lodge under the ejector star when you eject. You can minimize it by holding the barrel vertically when you eject.

Good shootin'. You have a fine revolver.

This is a photo of a 17-6 without the barrel lug and with a heavy barrel - if I can post the photo correctly.
It's a real shooter.
