Don't do what I did.

I figured with my fancy new scope on my 45-70 giving me a couple tenths of an inch more eye relief I wouldn't have to worry about getting scoped.

Well, .38 Special lied when they told me to "hold on loosely", because I recently got scoped for the first time ever.   :'(

Man I have seen some nasty scope eye before , but have been fortunate and have only been slightly kissed before  :-* 8) :o
Funny quick story. I was visiting inlaws and brought my 270 M70 with some crap reloads..just used them for fun plinking. Well I ended up getting sick and got larengitus (spelling) and lost my voice the second day ::). Well a inlaw uncle wanted to shoot it...never shot a gun in his life :-X... and he rode up on the scope, I mean RODE up on it! I wispered at the top of my lungs and with all my might hoping to get a voice break to warn him in time, but it was too late..BAM!!! he came up with blood running down his eyebrow and had to go back to the family gathering... he still has the scare and it's been over a year and a half ago ;D

Ty, I suffer severely from CRS.  Perhaps you're too young to know the meaning of those letters, and let's hope by the time you're a grandpa you won't have to worry about it.  My problem is if I kneel a certain way and rest a big rifle on the porch rail, I get an instant case of "Scope Eye".  Now, you'd think just about anyone could remember and learn from that.  Nope, did it 3 days ago with the .45-70. :(

Red dot it, no more scoped eye brow.  True Glo and Aimpoint even have 2X red dots w/1 MOA dots.  Love the Bushnel on mine.  MOA of pig w/4 different reticles, my choice.

I saw that Bushnell on Cabelas web page for I think 109.00.  It looked good, and not a bad price.  I just ordered a cheaper one with a 4 MOA dot.  If I don't like it, I'll put it on my Red Ryder and get the Bushnell.

One trick I found when zeroing with a red dot is to zero with a 6 o'clock hold, e.g.; dot at bottom center of the zero circle or square with POI centered.  I get tighter groups then with the conventional hold of blacking out the intended POI.

I mount my scopes so I have to pull all the slack out to get the proper eye relief.  With the gun pulled in tight you don't get bit.

....or just buy scopes with longer eye relief  ;D Leupold has always been very good about this, and it's nice to see many other manufactures making scopes with longer ...non critical ..eye relief.  Looks like the new Mueller Hybrid is a good fit lately.

The Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32 is a great scope for the .45-70 IMO.
