Projects...?
« on: July 30, 2009, 07:07:29 PM »
Just had to tell you guys I wemt to the range today with mixed results.. The Browning T-bolt (Belgian) with the salt wood as a project only shot so so... I think the scope went bad?? Oh well I guess I'll try again.. The stock is leaking salt badly and has to soon be removed(and destroyed!!). I tried some more loads for the CZ527 22 Hornet and the Hornaday V-Max 35 grain load with 12 gr. of H110 put 3 in a single hole! The 45 grain Hornaday (12 grains of Unique??, brain's cutting outjust now) shot very well but the V-Max was superb.. I have a blank for the T-bolts reserection but really wanted to know if the barrel would have to come be replaced before too much restoration effort went into it..  I'm getting the 270 on the 721 action ready to blue. I'm just the polisher and I've found a local with hot tanks for the dip.. I still have to mark the caliber and clean the bottom metal and clips and repaint. The laminated stock just needs the forearm stiffened a bit and installation of the the sling studs.. May be a deer shooter this year!! I've not even started on the 336 Federal or reworking the 35 Whelan... although I've got the 98 action about ready to get the A&B barrel after it's removed from the intermediate length action it's on..(woops!!) Still haven't even started the restoration of the Winchester 47(really a sad thing) of the completion of the Winchester 68 with parts gone..? Happiness is a waiting list of projects..so I must be happy indeed.. Hows your projects going?

If it weren't for the garden, I keep telling myself that I'd have finished turning a mod 24 Savage into a 5mm over .410. But after peeling the top bbl, the green beans are here. Then the corn, then the tomatoes. One of these days (Aug.15) I'll be getting tired of vegetables and maybe get back to the gun projects, as that's when squirrels come in season. Another project is a mod. 6 Remington clone and a set of bluing tanks. Had the metal cut and bent with end pieces ready to weld in but haven't been getting to it. Might be I ought to start with a bushog. Then I'd be free, huh?

The squirrel swason stays open in Missouri from it's Memorial Day opener until january 15(I think.) . I don't hunt many squirrels after the deer seasons start. And then theres the fall turkey season..love those tender jakes. They'll almost fry. Quail are almost gone but I can't walk that much anyway so the few I still hear are safe. I kill squirrels of the bird feeders all summer long, they're distructive little buggers..so the CZ stays close. The 270 is so close to done I'm getting ansy. I would really like to shoot a deer or two with it this fall. I've owned several 270's over the years but they just wouldn't stay home.. This one I'm penning up. I converted a BDL stock to a DBM after aquiring the bottom metal on E-vilbay for little money. After fitting it the thing works well. The stock was an experiment from a stock making outfit that didn't work out. They were lightening laminafted stocks but couldn't keep the strength. I will fill the huge hole in the forearm with arrow shafting bedded in epoxy. The butt stock hole should be OK. I was going with the all weather theme and powder coat the metal but found a bluing tank set up and running locally. Need to help the guy out a bit as I have other projects and I just like the blued steel look, old fashioned I guess. I'll try to up load some photos if I can figure out how show you guys the toys..

Enfield 2A in need of sandblast so that I can Aluma Hyde it.  Made a sporter style stock with a drill purpose stock set from Springfield Sporters.  It is splotchy coachwood, but the fitting job that I did on the recoil pad is, hands down, the best work that I have done.  I used a Pachmayr and the others were Limbsaver.  Maybe the Limbsavers are harder to work because they are so soft..........

Window shopping online for small $100 compressors to power blaster.

Bought the epoxy to bed my CZ 527 in 7.62x39.  BEST RIFLE EVER.  Only hiccup to this rifle is reassembly is so hard to do.  The rifle can be assembled with receiver properly vertical, or canted 5-10 degrees in either direction........so it needs bedding in my opinion.  Otherwise, metal finish, accuracy, operation, caliber.....love it.

Recrowned Yugo SKS that had barrel cutdown.  Going to range to test Wednesday if I get up early enough (I work graveyard).

Trying to find escutcheon to cover 3/4 hole around action screw Winchester 670.  Coming up goose eggs on that one.

Bone pile project is Remington 700 that scratches brass as it feeds and strokes over the #3 and #4 cartridges.  Can't find burr, have polished, don't know.Have shimmed under mag box, tried different things, can't figure out.  Shame is that it is my most accurate rifle.  I drag it out every couple of months and fiddle with it.  Can't sell it in good conscience.

Nothing really major, but keeping busy.

You say the 700 scratches the brass.. length wise or circumferencially.. at the shoulder, down the body or near the casehead, on the neck?? Have you checked the mouth of the chamber and the edges of the locking recesses? Had one once that made length wise scratches and had a heck of a time. Finally located a burr on a locking recess. It must have been trued at one time and the barrel reset. The truing operation left a burr that would occasionally scratch brass..
Forgot,, could there be a burr in the chamber?? This is usually easy to fix by burnishing with steel wool wrapped on a small cleaning mop and spun in a hand drill..

no, it is definately the bottom of the receiver.  as the bolt pushes the cartridge forward, I have can feel and see the brass get scraped across. I have filed and polished, afraid to take too much off.

aarrrgh, I am going to end up digging it out again.  am off for next 4 days.

The scratches are longitudinal from case head to shoulder.

I mounted an SPS action in a Classic, blind magazine stock.  I have wondered if the magazine was too shallow or too deep.  Tried different followers, springs, stock.

My theory right now is that the bottom of the recevier is machined at wrong angle or something.

Had one case rupture on scratch line (was Remington store bought, not my handloads).

No major projects, just a bit of re-furbishing:

1. Picked up a Marlin Mod 75 that will not always feed and mis-fires.  My guess is a feed throat conversion and perhaps a new firing pin.

2. Found a .270 Savage 110E at a pawn shop that needs a little TLC. It has a stripped sling swivel hole and another one drilled in its place that is off-center and cut at an angle.  Someone also in-bedded some type of coin on each side of the stock.  Its not a bad job, a bit gaudy for my taste, but I can probably live with it if the gun turns out to be a shooter.

rebuilding two Remington 7mm rolling blocks into 38-50 R-H.  Have receiver flats ground parallel on both so far.  One has the receiver face squared to the threads also.  Next is fitting and chambering the 1 1/8 octgaon barrel.
