Blow By, anyone shooting Deer Stalker or Yukon?
« on: August 16, 2009, 03:17:20 AM »
Been comparing videos of mainly Traditions Yukon and Pursuit models. Seems that perhaps either could have blow by issues?

In some videos it looks like a puff comes out near the breech in both models, in others, looks like the break action Pursuit is sealed tighter?

Or is this my imagination? Area all 208 guns prone to some blow by?

All are prone to it, but there are some that have a good enough seal to have basically none. The T/C's seem to have the best factory plugs for controlling blowback.

There are other factors to consider as well, and each rifle is different. One breech plug may have a different OAL than another, primer pocket may be deeper or larger diameter. You can take two rifles of the same model, they may look identical to the naked eye, but the headspace could easily be .010" to .020" different, possibly more.

The primers themselves, they have different lengths and diameters. Some primers have much more heat and pressure, as well as a longer burn time than others. The type of powder and it's burn characteristics also makes a difference in blowback.

Personally, I would steer clear of the Yukon (for several reasons), just too many other better made rifles for the same or less money to even consider one IMO. Some of the steel framed Pursuit models can be decent rifles IF you can find one with a nice trigger. Traditions rifles always seem to have very heavy triggers for the most part.

Hmm... well I guess it can't be any worse than a flintlock in any case, LOL!

I agree the Yukon has some design traits I don't like. I prefer the break actions. If for no other reason than the basic design is time tested.

Even so, I may spring for the Yukon anyway. I occasionally see the Redipack deal with a scope for cheap. At the moment I just don't feel good going up the price ladder much. Things turn around for me and I find 209 guns to to my liking I may just upgrade in the future and hang onto the Yukon as the "for my buddies" gun.

Seems most of the lower priced models have 24" barrels. The better models all seem to come in around 28" (very much like break action shotguns, LOL!). Any idea how much velocity I'll lose to that issue? Granted, might be able to get a little back with 777?

Been looking at bullets. Seems ballistic coefficient is the be-all-end-all indicator of numerical performance.

An example that sticks out. The 240 gr. .44/.50 XTP outperforms the same weight .45 XTP by a margin. (Makes me wonder why one would choose the .45, 240 gr. XTP?)
