Bobwhite or Ringneck? 20 gauge or 28?
« on: July 23, 2009, 03:12:08 AM »
I've got my mind set on getting one of the above guns, but I am undecided which to get.  I do very much like double triggers on the Bobwhite but this is not a deal breaker.  The Bobwhite's English stock configuration is also nice, but not especially the high comb.  On the other hand, the Ringneck may have better wood and finish(so I'm told).  Looks are important to me, especially when I sit in my armchair doing imaginary hunting. Regarding barrel length, I'm leaning towards 28" barrels.  I've never seen either gun in the flesh---just basing my thoughts on pictures and what I have read.

Regarding gauge, the 20 gauge is more adaptable and has cheaper and more available ammo.  Yet, the 28 is lighter and many prefer it.  I already own a 22 mag/20 gauge combo gun,  so I woulnd't have to buy separate ammo.

What say ye folks?  I plan to order one soon.

Could someone please send this posting to the CZ shotgun forum?  My mistake.

There really isn't a CZ Shotgun forum. We do have a CZ Forum but mostly folks discuss their rifles and handguns there. I think a better place for it is the Shotgun Forums where it will be seen by several folks who own or have owned them.

I've owned both Bobwhite and Ringneck and in .410, 28 and 20 gauge. I will say that for my use both the 28 and especially the .410 are just too tiny for my tastes. The 20 feels best by far of the three. I love the 28 gauge and use it a lot but prefer it on a 20 gauge frame as the ones on a properly scaled frame according to the makers mostly feel like toys in my hands. Which to get is a very personal thing. I do like the looks and feel of the straight stock guns but just can't quite get used to double triggers.

I had a Bobwhite in a 28ga and it only comes in a 26" BBL configuration (or it did when I bought). I found the 26" barrels made it too light for me and I had a tendency to "overswing" on most "pass" shots. I eventually had to send it back to CZ because of pattering problem (another story) and "opted" to upgrade to a Ringneck with a 28" BBL. The longer barrel took care of the overswing problem and the better fit and finish made me a very satisfied customer.
The triggers are "mechanical" on both models and CZ told me it was easier to make an adjustment to the Ringnecks single trigger than the dual triggers of the Bobwhite. While I normally prefer double trigger on a SXS shotgun, the Ringneck trigger position suits me to a "T" and is better, "weight wise", than the Bobwhite's.
Ammo is higher for the 28ga than the 20ga, but I reload and availability has not been a factor with wads or hulls. Both models are "extractor" only, which is good for a reloader.
While the 20ga enjoys better availability and factory shells are cheaper, the 28ga is a vast step up in effectiveness (IMO) from the .410 bore without the extra weight of the 20. Of course I like "odd ball" gauges and calibers, and I'm a big fan of the 16ga as well ;D.

If the upgraded items are important to you I would give up the double triggers and get the Phesant.
either way you will be happy with the shot gun.
Now that CZ has taken the strangled pigeon (Sorry the Turkish eagle) off of the cocking peice I really like them and have one on my wish list.  And not too far down.

Well, it would be nice to have a CZ sxs in each of the above configurations, but I do have to be practical and limit myself to owning only a few guns. A gun that can do most everything is what I need. I think I'll go with a 20 gauge with 28" barrels.  I still like double triggers, but if the Ringneck or Pheasant is much better finished than the Bobwhite, that would be appealing.

To those of you that own both the Bobwhite and Ringneck, is the fit and finish better in one model than the other?

By the way, the last sxs I owned was  a Stevens 12 gauge. Like a crazy kid I sold it for spending money 40 years ago.

Do yourself a favor and take a look at the DeHaan guns. They are made in the same factory in Huglu, Turkey as are the the CZs but they have a better fit and finish. They are just imported by DeHaan rather than CZ. Same gun.

A few years ago I looked at De Haan and when I asked if I could get a gun with out the Trukish double headed eagle on the gun,
I was not so polite and called them the strangled pigeon.  I think the gentleman I spoke to was Turkish and did not like how I decribed the bird.  But all of them come with that symbol.

I sort of lean towards well made but not elaborately decorated guns.  A lot of engraving is a turn-off, as well as painted metal and use of aluminum.  You guys are helping me make up my mind.  I think I'll just order a CZ Bobwhite in 20 gauge with 28" barrels.  If I ever get to the point where I can justify something more expensive, I'll get that.

I think you'll enjoy the Bobwhite 20 ga.  I have one just like you ordered, that an one in 28 ga too.  I use the 20 ga. for ducks over decoys with bismuth and Kent Matrix.  Bought the ammo some years ago when ever I could find a deal.  I've had both these shotguns since they came out and have never had a problem with either.

I have the bobwhite 20 and it is very lightweight and shoots true. It had a tight hinge at first, but breaks open nicely after two seasons. I was able to get a very good deal on it. Cabelas had $100 credit card deal if I signed up so I special ordered a bobwhite with the gun library manager. Anyway he gave me a good deal on the price and I was able to get the shotgun for $597. I then bought a nice case and twenty boxes of Fiocchi Golden Pheasant at that time was $10/box.

Getting one for under $600. is exceptional!  Perhaps that was several years ago?  Recently, I have found them advertised from $643.(chain store) to $885. (gun dealer).
