Kind of interesting about Guide Gun Loads
« on: June 18, 2009, 02:31:01 PM »
Not really a big dilemna but would like some other thoughts or experiences. My early model Guide Gun w/18" barrel getting 1850 fps with 300gr JHP's using IMR3031. 1.5" at 100yds and has been for about 10 years. Great load and kills extra dead.  I Found a reloading site suggesting an interesting load using H322 and it is also accurate but 5" higher at 50yds and kicks like a mule and pushes close to 2150fps. WOW! The same powder with with a 405gr JFP and 6 grains less feels much milder and gets about 1750fps. It also hits exactly the same zero as the old 300gr 3031 loads and also gets a hog's attention quite well. I still have about 40 more of 300gr brutes and would love to take something with them but I hate to rezero a scope that I haven't had to touch for a decade. Any comments?

If ya like the pounding then go for it. :-\  Keep track of your clicks re-zeroing the scope and you should get close when you change back.  DP

you could also just take the present scope and rings off and replace with another scope/rings setup for the different load.

Get one of the hammer knockers and unload them and reload them the way you would like them......

It seems like short barrel rifles act a little like handguns in that changing the weight of bullet can really change point of impact. Heavier bullets and hotter loads can make the bullets hit high at shorter ranges because the barrel is higher in recoil when the bullet leave it, I guess.

much to my own surprise it is the other way around. Shooting the same weight bullet at a higher velocity bring the point of impact down since the bullet leaves the muzzle earlier the recoil hasn't had the time to raise the barrel as much as a slower bullet would have.  Sounds goofy but that is how it works out.

I had a boss who called goofy stuff like this "counterintuitive", haha ! OK, I get it; it must just be heavier bullets that do it then.
