My new K-9 bait
« on: August 08, 2009, 06:35:11 PM »
This is my new bait recipe. If anyone can think of anything that they might add let me know. I took 20 pounds of freezer burnt deer meat and added 6 oz. tinctured beaver castor and  16 ozs. fish oil. I put this in a 5 gallon bucket with a fly-proof lid. I plan to let this "cook" for a couple of weeks before I add the sodium benzoate. Half will get some tinctured skunk essense and the other half will be left as is. Like I said, if anyone can think of anything that might add to this recipe let me know. Worm

Worm, throw in some beaver oil sacs, and some non-tinctured beaver castor.
This will really spice up your bait--the canines love oil sacs, and non-tinctured castor will draw any and evey animal.

Tom, I actually thought about the saq oil today as I was stirring up the meat. With the heat we've been having I don't think I'll have to wait to long to add the sodium benzoate. Even with just the tinctured beaver castor the meat is taking on that nice sweet smell that castor puts into a good meat bait. Tomorrow I'm going to split up the meat into 3 different batches and add saq oil to one, skunk tincture to one and leave the other like it is for early season bait. I may even do a little more experimenting with the one batch and see what sort of reaction I get later on in the season. I have some beaver meat that I did the same thing to and it really draws them in.

Several ingredients come to mind as age-old stand-bys; asafoedita powder along with the castor, a hint of something sweet like honey or anise oil and muskrat glands/musk was used by most of the old-time bounty wolfers in either a base of tainted venison or fish. Asa

RdFx, I beleive you really are part canine, but than again this bait makes my mouth water too. The beaver castor really adds a sweet smell to bait. My dog sits and drowls everytime I go into the bottom of the barn because he knows I'm tinkering with bait and will usually throw him the stirring stick.

Just started a new bait. Its ground up ground hog. Got them from a guy up north. He skinned and gutted them and than froze them. I ground them bones and all, now need some more ideas on adding to it.  Any ideas? Also does anyone know where I could pick up a larger size grinder? The one I have works, but its to small in my opinion.
