Been kinda wondering about that myself since Sierra for some reason sent me 2000 of their 77 grain bullets. I had only asked for 500. I'm not sure I'll ever shoot that many of them.

Tim, you could just ship 500 of those to me  :D  I'd like to try some out.  I prefer a heavy bullet when hunting and maybe some long range work

I am in the process of building a 22 BR with a 1-8" twist. These are the kind of bullets I have been thinking about. I got 100 75 A-Max, 100 - 80 Noslers and 50 - 80 Sierras to try out to start with. I wanted a little flatter trajectory than a 223 could afford with the wind bucking advantage of the longer bullets. Once I settle in on a bullet, I will order more.

I forgot to answer your powder question - try the Varget first. It has given many people their best accuracy with the heavier bullets. That is no guarantee it will shoot well for you, but a good place to start. Good Luck and Good Shooting

I've been using RL-15 for 68 and 69gr bullets.  I can't imagine that it won't work with 75/77grs.

So help me understand what OAL and case capacity issues I might have with bullets that long. Especially in my semi-autos. I've been afraid to buy any for my RRAR with 1:8 match barrel. Bill, I was under the impression those heavy .223 slugs were not constructed for hunting but high BC's for long range bench work. Make me smarter folks.

Yup I think that's right but if you pushed them fast enough they might work for some hunting situations. Personally I have no plans to use them for hunting. You'll have to deep seat them to function in the magazine of any AR you plan or for that matter any magazine gun. I think they are supposed to be capable of it tho as all companies that make them offer data for their use in .223 fast twist guns and that's usually an AR more often than not.

Still until I give them a try I dunno.

I've been Shooting The Hornady 75gr Match loads out of My RRA's.  They shoot very well 1/2" and under @ 100. the C.O.A.L. is 2.245" to 2.250"  on all the factory rounds that I have measured . Wich is mag length.  they perform great on Groundhogs.  Unlike Seirra,  Hornady does recommend Their match bullets for Hunting.  I pulled a Few of the Factory Loads apart the other Night. I found 24 Grains Of a Yellowish, Gold, short cut stick powder. That looks Very much like Varget. The 24 grains is over book max for VARGET though !!  I do think that Varget is the Powder I'm going to start with . As always start low and work up Right!

I was under the impression that Sierra target bullets have thin jackets so they do not recommend them for hunting deer sized game. But they should be alright for varmints. While the A-Max were of a thicker jacket material and were OK for some hunting situations. While out in OK I heard Dan (our host) talking about using the Sierra 80 grain bullets in his .224/243 for game including coyotes, deer, antelope and occasionally on PD. I am just getting into shooting heavy bullets, so I will find out first hand sooner or later. ;D

For 77grain Nosler CC bthp's and Seirra's 77 bthp I found reloader 15 and H335 to shoot the best in my rifle. Hornady 75 bthp's worked better with varget. I always wanted to try blc (2) but have yet to do it.

This was with a R700 tactical 20" 1-9 twist factory rifle.

I tried Seirra's 69 grain and had good results with H335 as well but the wind effects on it past 200 yards compared to the 75-77 grain was quite telling.
