Guess the Score?
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:09:52 PM »
I got my 2008 Kansas archery buck scored Friday so I thought I'd make a game/learning experience out of it...  I'll post the official score sheet Wednesday.

Definitely a very nice Buck there, dukkillr. I'd be proud to hang him on my wall. Big congrats to you for taking a fine trophy, especially with a bow.

Here is my rough guess on how he scored:

32" spread width
52" main beams
68" Tine lengths
16" for 8 mass/girth measurements

Total = 168

A stab in the wind says 154 7/8th.   ;D

I would be sincerely PROUD to have a head like that gracing my wall.  Very Nice Deer.

And just look, he barely fits through a 6'-8" door!!!  Imagine that!

My caculations say 122 but it looks a bit better. Still I doubt it will go over 130. I'm giving it 22" on each beam plus 22" spread. I'm calling the brows at a bit under 3" after deducts,  G2s at 8" after deducts and G3s at 6" after deducts, G4s I'm giving 2.5" after deducts and at most 16" for mass.

My toughest decision was beam length and width. I don't see either going over 24" which could add as much as another 6" which is why I peg it at no more than 130. Those stickers are deducts on a typical score and it doesn't have enough of them to score it as a nontypical.

Dukkillr,

I had a look at the score sheet. I have to say this little exercise was fun and educational in terms of scoring a Pope & Young Whitetail. I learned a few good things that I had overlooked while making my guess. For example, on scoring H1-H4, I thought the circumference of each measurement was taken at its largest point rather than smallest point. Also, I thought that spread width was taken at the outside of the main beams rather than the inside of the main beams. Are those measurements possibly just particular to P & Y scoring? I also learned that I didn't take the deductions seriously enough. Thus, it's always possible to learn something new here at GBO. Thanks much for the fun opportunity.

Sorry guys, I'm not going to give the total score because it's Dukkilr's deal, so you'll have to wait until he lets the cat out of the bag. Either that, or get out there and find the score sheet like I did. ;)

I think skunk is in the ballpark at 168", maybe a bit high. A mature midwest buck is approximately 14" eartip to eartip, so i'll put that at approx 19-20 inside spread. Wheres the scoresheet dukk?

Well GB obviously thought this was some kind of buck from Alabama...  Most of you were very close...  I like to study sheets vs. heads so I can get better at judging deer while they're still walking around.

Dukkillr, I recognized that Buck right away as an escapee from a Wisconsin swamp. ;)

If any of you fellows are having a hard time reading the score sheet, then just Right click on it and select "View Image." The sheet will come up on a separate page and will allow you to make it bigger, so you can read it more easily.

Very nice deer, dukk. The pike I catch are always ten inches longer too until they're in the boat! ;)

Taking a relook while replying awhile ago one thing I noticed is the side view and the front view look almost like different heads. I was going on the front view only in making my estimates. I might have added some for the side view if I had been looking at it. Quite amazing how different a view they give of the tine length.

Doubt I'll be out that way any time soon.

I'll guess the score:
beautiful deer, great hunt, fair chase (I presume), worked hard for him, everything came together, made a good hit, exciting wait time, got down and found him, got some good meat, taxidermist did a fantastic job...

and the score is:   A+

 ;D
