760 & 7600
« on: February 21, 2004, 08:20:49 PM »
Is the 7600 really a large improvement over a 760? I have handled one  older 760 rifle in 30-06 and it seemed to be lighter while the 7600 seems to have a heavier barrel.
After checking the prices at auction arms, the used 760 rifles are bringing as much or more than a new 7600 synthetic. Kind of like pre-64 winchesters being worth more than post 64s.
From strictly a hunting point of view and not a collectors, is the 760 a better rifle?

Remington 7600 vs 760

Contender,
I owned a 760 and it was accurate and dependable. It had thin, multiple bolt locking lugs, whereas the 7600 has 4 larger lugs. I believe the lower number of lugs and their increased size are of significance in the 7400 autoloader in improving dependability over the 740 and 742 models. However, as far as I can tell, it mattered not a whit in the pump. I believe it did not hurt the pump either, and obviously, Remington wants parts commonality for ease of manufacture.

760 vs 7600?

One significant change in the 7600 could be that the foregrip is hung from a lug attached to the action not hung from the barrel. My 7600 barrel seems to be heavier than the 760s I have handled. That may not fit all models. Bandito

Generally, are all the 760 barrels a lighter contour? The difference seems to be quite a bit. This 760 had the older corn cob style forend and no checkering on the stock. It has a great balance to it.
