I have a colt saa given to me by my dad. Serial#1843403. Any way to tell how old this gun is? It is .38spl so I guess its not an antique. He told me it had been converted and re-barreled. I dont know what it was originally.

Any help would be appreciated.

200,000 range serial numbers are circa 1900, so that is about 1899.  And yes, it has definitely been re-barreled if it says "single action army .38 special" on the barrel.

oops, just noticed your serial number given-- sounds like 2nd generation 1950's to me.

I believe you can call colt and find a date.  They will try to sell you a written history of the gun leaving the colt factory and where it was sent to for a couple hundred dollars, you will likely not want that.  One big advantage to a Colt or colt type revolver is that you can change the caliber with just a re-barrel and having a smith ream the cylinder or just change it.  Since that gun has already been redone, you would not lose any value by making it what you want.  It's still dad's gun either way so it will still have the same emotional value to you and you could shoot it in the caliber you might want.  Or just leave it as a .38 and enjoy it.  Most used Colt SAA will sell in the $900 range.  .38's are a little less, nickled .44's a little more.  44 Man

Thanks for the info.
I am defiantly not looking to sell it. Was just kinda interested in getting some info about the gun. I will be keeping it and most likely will leave it as is. I will be looking for a colt or a re-pro in .45lc one of these days also.

Well, let's see here where do we start ?? In the first place NO Colt SAA has ever had a serial number even approaching the one you quoted here. If that is the real and true number on the gun there is a a HUGE discrepancy at large here, and to say something is amiss is the understatement of the day, if not the month...heck, maybe the year.
