Skunk Trapping
« on: September 30, 2003, 11:44:56 AM »
A couple weeks ago my freind was nearly spraid by a skunk that had been trapped in his live cage trap. He said that the scent stayed in the area and on his trap for days.

Since this is going to be my first year trapping skunk I wanted to know how to kill a skunk that is in my live trap without it spraying me or releasing any scent at all?

    -Thanks

The best way to do it is to buy yourself a baby pacifier...you get directly behind the skunk...grab his tail gently and...   call me!!! I want to watch!!!! Actually you have numerous ways to uthanize the skunk. You can use a kill pole and inject him, you can drown him, shoot him in the lung area with a pellet rifle or low power .22 round, asphixiate him eiter via exhaust or CO2 chamber.

Iv been using the "shoot'em in the lungs" method from a few paces back.  Most of them dont spray.  Also, after you skin them, soak the unfleshed pelt in vinegar for 30 min and then hang to dry in the shade.  Then flesh and there wont be any skunk odor left to them.

I've been using the shoot 'em in the lungs approach too from several paces back. Remember to aim low...gravity keeps their vitals rather low in the rib cage. Touch that central nervous system anywhere with a bullet, i.e. the head, the spine, etc. and you will force the sphincter muscles to involuntarily squeeze and thus "spray" every time. A heart or lung shot with a low power round seems to be the best approach for me.
