.22H to .225 Win?
« on: August 22, 2009, 04:52:50 PM »
I have a 2004 production SB2 .22H (synthetic stocks if that makes a difference for the exact model).  Muzzle measures .590", breech end measures 1.13-ish".

Would this be a 1-9 or 1-12 twist?  (My .22 cleaning rod isn't handy [handi? :D] right this minute to check).

Would this be a reasonable candidate for rechambering to .225 Winchester?

According to Cartridges of the World, .225 Win uses a 1-14 twist.  Would the 1-9 or 1-12 twist present a problem IF this is doable?

Thanks! ;D

No, a tighter twist would be nothing but better.  A 1-14 is very restraining.

I think (here I go again thinking ) It is a doable I believe it is 1- 12 twist.
If that Hornett barrel shoots a bad my two did. I would recamber to something.
1st one i recambered to 219 Zipper Shoots much better.
2nd I am going to have made in a 22 GNR. When funds get saved up.
Good luck Let us know how it does if you recamber. Marv.

Sounds like a Superlight, it would be 1:12", they didn't change to 1:9" until last year IIRC, 1:12" will work fine, there are several members here with 225 Wins made from 223s which were 1:12" also.

Thanks!  I've seen the threads on the .223 conversion but none on a .22H conversion.

The only "ïssue" I still see is the Hornet using .224" bullets vs the .223" called for with the .225 Win (rather ironic I suppose, a .223" bullet in a .225 named cartridge :D)

Datil, I really can't say how it shoots.  Before I spent much time with it I came into a CZ527 in .22H and well, the Handi hasn't seen any range time since... :o

The 1 in 12" will do just fine.

I just sold a rechamber (not by me) standard 223 - 1 in 12" barrel that I had bought here on GBO a while back to BCALL a few weeks ago.
With factory ammo it was about a 1" to 1.25" shooter but was able to work up a load using 29gr IMR 4320 behind a HORNADY 52gr HP that was getting just under 3/4".
I still have an old 22 JET barrel that was rechambered to 225 that will shoot a lot better than the one I sold.
It is a fine round, right on the heals of the 22-250.

The only thing I will say is that almost all of the books say to use (I beleave-I don't have my books handy) IMR4064 powder.
The barrel I sold hated that powder!!!

I have 2 Win model 70s, a Win model 670, a 26" BULLBERRY custom for my Encore, the old H&R Jet rechamber and my pride, an old Rem model 30S EXPRESS full custom with a 28" Pacnor barrel that will keep 5 under a dime if I do my part.

Go for it!
You will love the round!

Yeah, I tried to get in on that one but was too late! ;D

I keep thinking about building a Martini Cadet in .225 but this seems "safer".  Maybe I'm overthinking though.

All modern American barrels are made in .224. This includes the 22 Hornet and 225 Winchester. Proper twist rates are determined by the bullet length you are planning on using. Or if the twist is already fixed, then it will determine how long of bullets you are going to be able to shoot. A 1-12" twist barrel should handle 55 grain bullets with ease, maybe a little heavier depending on bullet design. A 1-9" should handle most bullets up to 67 grains maybe even 70 grains.

BTW I think the 225 Winchester is a worthy project. It makes a hot varmint or predator round. I was thinking about one myself, but settled on a 22K Hornet.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

I think I am gonna make a .225 out of my .223. I just don't like this .223.

LaOtto, thanks for the .223" vs .224" clarification.  I was going by the bullet diameters as listed at ammoguide.

I thought about a K Hornet but with 2 other regular Hornets to feed, I want to keep it (somewhat) simple. ;D

I did a 225 win out of a 1-9 24" 223 it shot alright with the heavy bullets but what I was looking for was the speed and I could not get that out of the 1-9 twist so I sold it. You really need to check the twist on your 22H as some are also 1-16 twist maybe not the 2004 but check to be sure . If you are looking for speed from a light bullet I would go with either a 1-16" or the 1-12". For me personally I am trying to decide if I should rechamber my 1-16"Hornet to 22-250 or just buy the 22-250 probly will get the 22-250 as I kind of like how the Hornet shoots I just don't use it that much.
