Springfield SXS question

I have a Springfield SxS made by Stevens Arms Company. It has a 17 inside the circle near the trigger guard. What is the history of this gun? I guess they were cheap, common, everyone had one guns.......?

Should just be a cheaper version of the Stevens 311 I suspect.
