Load for .270 Handi
« on: August 24, 2009, 04:30:28 AM »
Worked out a trade with Flinginarrows which will put a .270 barrel in my hands in a few days.  He is including some Lee reloading dies...so it made me start thinking about getting into reloading.  Not sure if I want to keep the dies and get a Lee hand press, or try to sell or trade the dies and get a simple Lee loader.  My volume of reloading will be very low so I think either would do.  Any thoughts?  I was also trying to find some info on a good starting load that has worked in a Handi...couldn't seem to find any on here, but I'm sure they are out there somewhere.  I'm thinking that I should spend as little as possible to get started since I'm not sure if I will stick with it or not.

Thanks in advance....

If you are exploring the hobby of reloading, I'd start with the Lee Loader.   It's simple, easy, safe, and produces some high quality ammunition.   I started this way and used my Lee Loaders for about a year before "graduating" to a Lee press.   I find that I don't use the Lee press exclusively - every now and then, I return to loading with the Lee Loader.

I'd also get a powder scale.  Again, I use a Lee product, the Lee Safety Scale.

And, ya gotta have a case trimmer because over time, the brass case will stretch due to firing, and they will need to be cut back in order to fit in the breech.

You must understand that reloading will not save you any money.   It's true that the cost of each cartridge will be less, the number that you will shoot will rise exponentially and you will be spending more money.

And, having more fun.

Lee Loader is 20 something. Cheap Lee dies and a Lee Hand Press are maybe 30 more. And the Hand Press is a lot easier to use for priming, plus you don't need a 10 dollar rubber hammer. Personally I don't see anyone saving any money as handloading encourages you to spend a lot of money on little stuff. Maybe after 1000 rounds of 270 you break even. The best deal by far is the Lee Challenger Press kit. A little more than the Anniversary kit, but it has the Auto Prime. Hornady has kits that are even more but cheaper after the bullet rebate.
