Dang It! My Wife Stole My Handi
« on: August 23, 2009, 10:25:29 AM »
My wife has claimed possession of my 223 Ultra with a bull barrel, and I was planning on using it if I got drawn for a deer management hunt. So, I am needing to get another Handirifle. I am thinking of getting one of the Dick's camo specials. The question is which caliber?

223 - I already have the dies and it would only take minor tweaking of the loads to get the rifle shooting the way I want it. The problem is 223 (even with a 90 grain bullet) is not as forgiving of distance or shot placement.

308 - More forgiving of shot placement. More recoil (meaning my wife won't grab it). I would need to get 308 dies and brass (that's a plus and minus).

What are your thoughts?

Depending on the part of the country your in , the 45/70 may be a great choice , it can be loaded down to fun plunking loads or up to teeth shaking big bear rounds .  :o  ;D

Since you sorta got a 223 get the 308. It performs well and your wife will not take it over - maybe. Then get a 30-30, then a 444 Marlin, 45-70, 30-06, 357, 44 Mag, 22 Hornet, 45 Colt, 25-06; the list goes on, and so does your addiction. It will not stop after 2 rifles ;)

LaOtto is a wise man ;)  Confucious Say "Woman who steals rifles needs more."  "Husband who looses Handi rifle needs many more."  The way I see it, you've got only one way to go.  Stimpy's got the right idea, start with the .45-70 and work down from there.  Good luck.  I thank God Patty's got her own rifles and pretty much leaves mine alone.  I still gotta move em around a lot to keep her confused.  It helps to keep moving the ammo too.

Well, you could look at a 7mm-08, that is a pretty good bambi cartridge.

As A wise friend of mine says:
" Biggest mistake you can make is to take your wife hunting because:
  1- She out shoots you
2- She shoots the bigger deer of the season
3- She buys more expensive rifles and ammo (or claims your favorite)
4- She gets the newest  ATV
5- She always has helpful suggestions as to how to improve your
      marksmanship
6 - She looks better in Camo than you do
7- She never complains about the weather like you do
8- She starts the fire with one match
9 - She never gets Lost
10- She never leaves anything important at home (maps etc>)

The perfect reason to buy 2 of each all the time (take the most accurate of the 2 for yourself).

I don't think you're gonna get 90 grain bullets to stabilize in any handi.  Or probably 80 grainers even.  75 grain Amaxes?  YES.  Those kill deer dead.

There are plenty of better choices for a handi than the 75 to 90 grain bullets for deer. Nosler parttions, winchester power point, or barnes TSX, one of those should shoot good enough for you.

My Dad confiscated my first .35 Whelen, so I got another one.

The wife took the second one.  Her response when I complained.  "It shoots good, I like it, Get over it".

Since she is my best hunting partner, she has it.  She had a youth stock put on it, so it is now too short for me anyway.  She is 4'11",  I'm 6'2".

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Well, I'm going to go for the 308. My wife promises (since it will be the Dick's camo stocks) that she won't take this one. Now, I'm hoping the scope will work out, since I doubt I'll be able to afford a new scope before the hunt.
