270 vs 06
« on: August 18, 2009, 03:53:22 PM »
Now I have done it....just picked up a vanguard in 270 at Wallyworld for $350.
Now I have to make a decision...
1.  rebore 270 to 35 Whelen Improved and sell the 1917 35 W Improved
to pay for the rebore or rebarrel
2.  Keep 270 and sell the 06
3.  Keep em all and eat beans and rice for the next two months
4.  rebore 270 to 35 W IM, sell 1917 W Im, 1917 06, and buy
a blackhawk in 357.....

Send it to Jesse Ompaugh and get it rebored to 30-06. I have a buddy that did the same with a 308win vanguard and he had it rebored to 358 win and since he's into cast bullets he's extremely happy. I think Jesse did the lands and grooves and
from the way its shooting should be the way to go. This way you get to keep your other toys and get a 30-06 for about $250 or so. Hopefully someone has his contact info as I do not. Frank

Maybe you should have asked the ?  before you bought the boat paddle. If you sell the 06 and keep the 270, may you be eaten alive by a pack of rabid min pins!

1. You already have a 35 W Improved so keep the 1917 and don't rebore the 270.
2. Will come back to this one, quite simple really.
3. You can eat beans and rice with and without selling anything, Yes, don't forget to add the sausage!
4. You would have to then sell the rebored 270 to pay for a trigger/action job on the ruger, among ALOT of other little touches that finally make it worth shooting.
2.(revisited) Sell the 270 AND the '06 and get yourself a .280! ;) See I told you it was simple. CRASH87

They make grown up Mac and Cheese too that are better tasting and cheaper than the Kraft Dinner.
but I say keep them all.  there were a few guns I sold to finance others and regret selling some of them.

Thanks for the direction....guess its a good thing I cook a mean
red beans and rice, ya won't need no hot sauce, that's what the Creole
seasoning is for.
Yet no mention of the blackhawk other than a trigger job...that's
an easy one, done at home.

280, now there is a thought.....a baby 7 mag...na, never liked the mags.
Why is the 280 better than the 270 thats not considered as good as the 06.

By the way, only way I like Mac and cheese....add the Creole seasoning....

OH OH!, Do I see a 270 vs. a 280 vs. a 30/06 debate coming? I hope not ::) LOL. I WILL NOT be any part of it. Personally I always felt the 280 was a better caliber on the '06 case over the 270. It just never got the hype the 270 did, and that was probably the reason there were no where near the amount of rifles, proper rifles, chambered for it.  And the '06? "yawn", but it becomes something special when you neck it up a little. CRASH87

7mm Rem Mag and forget all the debate ;D

That was the choice I made in 1982 and I have no regrets.  It shoots flatter and can deliver more downrange energy and velocity than either and, contrary to common misconceptions, can do it with less recoil than the .30-06.

A 7mm RM really isn 't an an option here, or so it seems based on the original poster's question.  I'd eat the beans and rice and keep them all.

OK to Chime in on the 270 -280-06 debate.
All have there merrits all have their deductions.
after all we are talking the difference between .277, .284, and .308.

I also think 280 would have had a better start if Remington quit renaming it!
First it was 7-06 then 7mm Express, then finally 280.
I also think they should have done the 7mm's as a family and showed the versitillity of them but they came out with 4 7mms and they all do about the same thing.  7-08, 284, 280, and 7mm are all within 100-200 FPS of each other with a 140 grain and do exactly what the 30 cal does.

When a freind was looking at a 7mm Mag I always thought why get a 7 when a 300 will do so much more.  After reading up on the 7mm Mag, one is now on my want list.  but so is another 308 win and another 338WM.
But I have a different intended use for each of the new wants.  I am guessing much like Lost Oki has uses for each of his 270, 06, and 35Wh.

Mcwood, let us not forget the lowly 7X57. I truly enjoy my 280, but I also own a 7mm Mag. The 280 utilizes 139gr hornadys exclusiveley, they just work. I've been experimenting with the 7mm mag, have been since I bought it, '92. I just found an accurate reduced (7X57?) load, 160gr@2580fps. This with my 160gr@3010fps load and my 280, 139gr@2990fps load sets me up for pretty much anything. They all have versatility just gotta handload for em. Oh! Oh! :o mac is boiling over on the stove gotta run, Damn, I smell burning sausage too....................Crash87

Crash87,
Hope you saved dinner.
I did not forget the 7X57.  I think it is a great round.
But I was trying to stay with the streched version of it in the 30-06 case that the others are necked from.
Of the three I really dislike 270.  both of my uncles have them and used them on deer on our farm in NC.
What a mess.  the rounds would turn good venison into that goopy jello meat.  And lots of it.
I have sen whole hams goo ified.  Maybe it had to do with the little 130 grain bullets they were shooting.  Maye it had to do with how fast the thing flyes, or the construction of the bullet.  But they were always a mess.

I would probably blame the bullet in this case.  If you use ballistic tips or light construction bullets, your going to have explosions and wasted meat if you don't make that perfect broadside shot.  I bet if the a premium bullet were used, the problem would go away.  I have wasted meat on deer with my .280 because of less than ideal bullet placement.  Same with my dad and his 7mm, and my late grandfather and his .30-30.  I remember the last deer he shot.  It was a large doe that turned at the shot.  The bullet hit the rump and passed up through the guts and stopped in the shoulder.  The hindquarter on that side was basically turned to hamburger.
