seating 180 hprnady pistol bullets
« on: August 22, 2009, 11:44:19 AM »

I have a 356 Max that i am trying to shoot the Hornady pistol bullet that has a spitzer shap like many rifle bullets.
In my Redding dies the seating stem is for conventional pistol bullets that are flat or round nosed.
When seating these pointed pistol bullets, the lead tip gets pretty smashed.

How does one solve that?

You should be able to get the correct seating stem from Redding.  Ask for one for spitzer bullets.

Here is how Steven Cutter solved the same problem. You also could buy Remington 180 gr. sjhp bullets to use. Rounded nose like 180 xtp's and a ver good bullet.

"To keep from deforming the exposed lead tip on my pointed bullets, I had to modify the shape of the seating stem.  A sample bullet with a check for $12.00 was mailed to Lee Precision.  In less than 2 weeks, a new modified seating stem that matched the shape of my bullet was in my mailbox."

I don't know if redding can modify the seating stem or make you another. If they can't buy a Lee and do what he did.

I just got a 357 max barrel from MGM for my encore. Love it. very accurate and easy on the hands to shoot. good luck, John

You could just use the seating stem from a set of 35 caliber rifle dies..like the 35 Rem or even the 357 Herret etc..works for me.

I would think Redding would send you a seating stem for free, I know RCBS will.  Any time I have asked RCBS for a seating stem so I can seat pointed bullets in my single shots, they have done so at know charge and usually in two to three days.  The last time time I talked to the tech, he laughed said "you again" and we shot the breeze for a few minutes and I ended up with a pack of 8-10 different stems for various calibers by the end of the week.  RCBS has always had great customer service from my dealings.

thanks for all the help here guys.
I actually tried the seating stem from my Redding 22-250 dies, and it works fine.
But I will call Redding on Monday and see if I can get one specifically for the Hornady 180, so I don't have to move seating stems back and forth.

I called Redding this morning.
Long story short-
They make a seating stem specifically for this
They said they'd have one in the mail to me today
And they would not take any money for it

Wow, I'll remember that next time I need dies.
