Labor Day was a TARGET RICH environment
« on: September 08, 2009, 10:05:49 AM »
After nearly 10 months of NO HOGS (neighbor has been trapping 'em), we had to shoo hogs away from the gate with the truck on Labor Day just to get into the property.  I took my daughter Caroline with me.  A "First Timer".  She has shot a LOT before, but never shot an animal.  She LIKED it.

I shot a hog w/270 WIN Featherweight in the morning darkness (06:36 AM) while walking with Caroline to the stand.  It came out and stood right there in the road in front of us under the half moonlight...so I shot it!

I shoot another hog in the twilight from the stand while settling the two of us in (06:43 AM).  Then Caroline shot a hog in the daylight an hour later.  All of this while 15 other hogs were in various stages of rooting and scooting.

My deer hunting partner was on the West Road stand while all of this was going on.  He saw 8 deer (four bucks - one to 6-points) and one unleashed dog over the same two hours we were on stand shooting hogs not 100 yards away (in another direction).  Who would have thought that a few early morning gun shots would stir up the animals that way.  Go figure.

Modern Gun deer season for us does not start until November 14.

Maybe all that wetness and the high ground cover is what has them back again.

There is a lot of truth to that GB.  No doubt the surrounding lower woods are WET.  Being the high ground does have its advantages in concentrating the wildlife, even if the vegetation appears to me to be all weeds.  What do I know about weeds (or plants) anyway compared to the wildlife.  They are teaching and I am a slow learner...
