Finn Mod. 39 ammo to shoot?
« on: August 09, 2009, 04:47:33 AM »
I am thinking of getting a Mod. 39, have read all about them, and like what I hear.  Now I also have read about them being of a different bore size than the Mosin models.

Is this true?

What ammo shoots best in a Mod. 39? (bullet weight, brand ect.)

thank you

Russian light ball shot the best in my M39 as far as surplus.  Speer 311s shot like this:

I've heard and read that the finn's made the best mosin's, is this true? And if so, how hard are they to come by? CRO, that is an impressive group. What length barrel was that from? Please excuse my ignorance, I'm a wanna be shooter that has a wife and kids and not enough money to pay for both. Worm

I think it is mostly the older Finns that were .308". My M39 is fine with any .311" I care to stuff in it. You need to slug your bore to make sure.

My Finn also seems to prefer Russian light ball for milsurp ammo. But my reloads are more accurate. ;D

Rifle: 1944 VKT M39, iron sights
Range: 50 Yards, Temp 77, light breezes
Two groups of 5 each for ten total shots on target
First up, Czech Silvertip 147 grain. The two high shots were with an absolutely cold barrel, they came down after them.

Next up, Bulgarian Heavy Ball, don't remember how many grains the bullets were..yellow tips.

Then, Russian light ball, 147 grain.

Last of course, my reloads. JMS brass, 147 grain FMJBT's 49 grains of H4895, Win LR primers.
