This coming season the southern opener is 2 weeks latter than the north. So I plan to run a rat-mink line north of the dividing line till the south zone opens. If I stay in the south zone the only things open are raccoon, skunk, and opossum.

Not trying to steal or start a new topic, but I will anyway. LOL. With all the talk of rats. What do you put them up on? I was using wire, but tried some wood and liked how they turned out.

When my friend,Mike Tucker and I trap together-he puts them up on wood, and I use wire. Prices have always been the same on either put up.
I like the looks and feel of rats put up on wood, but the wire is faster and a bit easier.

I don't trap a ton of rats but I put most all mine on wire because like Tom said it's faster. I do have some wood here too for those ones the metal hooks just won't catch right on. Seems a guy can salvage some of the rats mink have half eaten also by pinning them on wood.

I hope the rats do go up this year, I never did sell last year because they were so low. I pressure wash a guys boathouse locally, that lives 200 miles away. He has a rat problem, since not used. It has given me 80-100 a season for 4 years now. You talk about a stench, they must swim up in there every night and have a party year round. I figured they'd be close to a beaver, but they will eat fish as well. Always fish bones on the inside when I pressure wash it.

rats here in Mn, actually sold pretty decent last year - in that $4.50 range local.

rats ARE the bright spot this year, but thats relative- they are predicted to open up around $4 locally- but compared to mink, yotes, etc- thats GOOD news.....trappnman

Tom
I actually went out duck hunting a couple days this week. In fact yesterday morning I shot my first goose of the year.
I would only be guessing as to why, but there seems to be more rat houses in the marsh this fall. It doesn't always mean more rats thought. It might just be that we have had really stable water levels this summer even dropping levels. I think some times when the water jumps up and down all summer the rats make less houses.
Won't really know till I go to trap if there are more???
