I like the bark river stuff, it is some nice looking stuff, so nice, I couldn't decide which one to get  :o
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

Get anything that you fancy, as long as it has a drop point and is under 4.5 inches long. You generally get what you pay for, so don't expect too much for less than $40 at $60 you should start finding some better quality steel used. Pay attention to the sheath that is provided. I have a few knives that I really do like to use but simply will not put on my belt because of the lousy sheath. They end up in my pack, which is OK but then I end up carrying another knife to be handy, the Leatherman fills this role pretty well.

If you are going to be field dressing Whitetails, you can get by with about anything honestly. I've used a 125 Thunderhead with two of the blades removed once. If you are going after Elk then I would say a high quality steel and something with backbone is necessary. You will most likely be breaking it down on site. A saw or small hatchet would be a good idea as well if you dont want to bone everything out.

I agree with EQ, the sheath has made and broken more deals for me with knives than any other.

I happen to have all the knives you named here. All are good serviceable models. Of the three I MUCH prefer the Cold Steel master Hunter. I'm not a huge fan of the current kydex sheath but its serviceable and very durable. Gerber IMHO has been going down hill in overall quality. SOG seems to be holding its own and Cold Steel continues to impress me with there different models and the unbelievable sharpness from the cheapest to the hi dollar customs.

As a matter of fact, I just bought a new Gerber yesterday. I do not know the model as nothing is marked on the blade sans the Gerber logo. Its a mirror polished 3" drop point with micarta scales, two brass pins a tapered tang and a lanyard hole. Its sheath is OK altho I'm not so sure its leather as it claims. Looks like synthetic/faux leather to me. I cannot find any pics online, but it closely resembles a loveless design.

You don't mention my favorite. Its a PUMA PAL. Not the current machine made junk, but the hand made Pumas of years ago. Its small in the hand, but big on performance, holds a edge forever and has stag scales!!

If you like the seal pup and that type of military style knife i would look into a

Condor-1

Falcon

Sh-8

I have don’t have any of these knives because they’re not my style (i have a Skinner and a folding knife from this company) and i got to say the knives i own do the job 100% and for me i also like them because mine came with a good edge and its the most simple to keep i came across.
Just chucking my opinion in but at the end of the day you will find i knife that suits you.

Pretty good advice as far as factory stuff goes. My advice is to pay attention to the steel.  If it just says stainless or surgical stainless I wouldn't touch it; unless sharpening your knife often is your thing. When ever the makers use a good steel they mention it by name.  You might pay a bit more(okay sometimes a lot more!) but the performance and longevity of the knife/blade is worth it.

Buy a custom made knife made of high carbon steel and you'll never need to buy another knife. Of course need has nothing to do with it.

Benchmade makes a nice hunter also . There is a nice Ka-Bar with a silver type coating and composite type grip that makes a hunter/sur/utility knife also for a great price . Russel out of Canada has some nice hunter models also .

Might look at the SOG Field Pup, I just picked one up a couple weeks ago and hoping it works out. Seems to be more intended for hunting purposes than tactical with a good sheath.

Hunt-m-up,
That SOG was his first choice as he wrote back in his initial post. I have one as well its a nice knife. IMHO the CS Master hunter is a better knife.

OP said Seal Pup which is a bigger knife than the Field Pup, but I'm a sucker for knives so now I need to look up the Cold Steel knife.
